Anthony has 40 as Nuggets end Cavs’ 13-game streak

CLEVELAND (AP)—George Karl called being on the court his sanctuary. Carmelo Anthony(notes) answered his coach’s prayer.

Anthony scored 40 points, including the winning basket, and Denver overcame LeBron James’(notes) monstrous night to end the Cavaliers’ 13-game winning streak with a 118-116 victory in overtime Thursday night in Karl’s first game since revealing he has neck and throat cancer.

“I think he’s happy,” Anthony said of his coach. “This boosted his spirit up a lot. In the back of our mind, we know his situation. We’re playing for him.”

James had his triple-double by the end of regulation, and became the first NBA player with at least 43 points, 13 rebounds, 15 assists, two steals and four blocks, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

James’ triple-double came in front of Oscar Robertson, who averaged a triple-double during the 1961-62 season. He was honored before the game along with Jerry West, James and Anthony as co-captains of U.S. Olympic gold medal basketball teams.

Robertson and West captained the Americans’ gold medal in 1960, while James and Anthony were the co-captains in 2008.

James is also the first player to have at least 40 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds in a game since Robertson had 42 points, 18 assists and 15 rebounds on Feb. 13, 1962.

“In that sense, it’s huge because of what he was able to do,” James said. “But in the sense of us losing the ball game, it means nothing.”

Anthony matched him shot for shot, hitting the winner on a deep jumper over an outstretched James with 1.9 seconds left.

“It’s finally me being on the other end I guess,” James said. “I’m so used to being on the other end making shots and looking at guys. It’s a great player and a great shot. If I got any closer, I was going to foul him. Big shot.”

Anthony jogged to the other end of the floor after hitting the shot, nodding his head and shouting to no one in particular as the Cavaliers called timeout.

“A lot of people got some good pictures out of that moment,” Anthony said. “I wanted the ball. I made the shot.”

Cleveland had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but James slipped while receiving the inbound pass and his 3-pointer rattled off the rim.

James, who played 47 minutes, missed his final four shots. Anthony, who played 48 minutes, made 7 of his last 8. Anthony and the Nuggets have now won 10 of 14 games against James and the Cavaliers since the two superstars entered the league.

“It was a great game to watch, but I’m not sure it will go on my coaching resume as very polished,” Karl said. “We probably should have won the game a little easier. We kept giving them chances and they kept taking advantage of them.”

Karl will likely miss some games and practices while undergoing a rigorous six-week treatment program of radiation and chemotherapy, but he accompanied the Nuggets on their two-game trip after deciding against taking time off now.

“I think I need the gym and I need the juice of being happy about kicking someone’s butt and preparing and watching video,” Karl said. “I felt very early it made no sense for me to separate from the team. … It’s going to be my sanctuary to do what I like to do and forget maybe the things that are always going to pop into your mind.”

Denver’s Kenyon Martin(notes) had 18 points and a season-high 17 rebounds, but the night belonged to two of the league’s top three scorers, who put on a memorable display.

Anthony added seven assists and six rebounds for the Nuggets. James’ triple-double was his third of the season and 27th of his career. He scored 18 of Cleveland’s 27 points in the fourth quarter and his 15 assists tied a career high.

James and Anthony entered first and third in the league in scoring, just as they entered the league in 2003 as the No. 1 and No. 3 overall picks. Neither disappointed on Thursday. The two combined to make just 4 of 20 shots in the first quarter, then spent the rest of the night hitting huge shots in each other’s face.

“You want to play against the best on the biggest stage,” James said. “Tonight was a big stage and we both did what we had to do to put our teams in position to win. He just made one more play.”

The Cavaliers introduced Antawn Jamison(notes) on Thursday, but were a bit short-handed since he couldn’t be activated in time for the game. They traded Zydrunas Ilgauskas(notes) on Wednesday to acquire Jamison in a three-team deal from Washington and the team is hopeful Jamison can be in the lineup Friday at Charlotte.

Shaquille O’Neal(notes) had 18 points and seven rebounds and J.J. Hickson(notes) had 14 points for Cleveland, which made just 23 of 40 free throws.

“We have to chalk this under another game of us beating ourselves,” O’Neal said. “The whole world knows we beat ourselves tonight. Too many turnovers, too many missed shots.”

NOTES: Robertson believes James could average a triple-double for a season, as he did. “No doubt about it,” he said. … Denver reserve Chris Andersen(notes) walked to the locker room while holding his back in the fourth quarter. He did not return. … Martin returned to the Nuggets after missing the final two games before the break with tendinitis in his left knee. … Denver has won five of its last seven in Cleveland.

wow! i could see the laker fans are scared of lebron and the cavs. with Antawn Jamison joining the cavs, i don't see them not winning it all this year. laker fan watch out cause lebron and the cavs going to win the nba championship this year and the next 6 years to come. lakers are not winning against the nuggets in the playoffs so we are going to see a cavs vs nuggets match up in the finals. looks like snoop over here is still crying because the cavs beat the lakers TWICE this year.

Team chemistry is a fragile thing that front office people and upper management don't take serious enough. Dealing Z away was one of the worst decisions ferry has made unless he's certain to get him back next month. He' throwing a new personality into the mix here and there will be an adjustment period for the players to go through .It happened at the beginning of the season when Shaq came on board. But what has me more nervous is their lack of focus at the free throw line. That's why they lost last night. ..(Shaq 0-6).This is a prime example of what happens when you mess with the chemistry. Everyone loses focus. If anyone out there doesn' think this is real, you're fooling yourself. Without him even suited up for the game or on the bench , the presents of someone new has an effect especially on the younger players. They just saw a veteran player get shoved out the door on a gamble. They also saw what hard work and loyalty gets you after all the years you had to endure with a losing franchise. I'm surprised Lebron didn't speak up more .Why would you throw a bucket of bolts into a fine running engine? It took you nearly five years to get it this far, your last four losses have been by a total 8 points going back to Christmas and with a third of the games to go, you deal away one of the guys that got you to this point. Time will tell if this was wise but if the Cavs come out flat tonight and lose back to back games.....I'm afraid this could be a bad sign .What happens if Shaq goes down ? Mike Brown better get Z back here someway, somehow ,or we'll all be singing that famous song ...Wait Till Next Year.

I am a fan of James, hes a great talent, but his preferential treatment from the refs looks rediculous at times. He is allowed to bang the ball handler on defense, but rarely does a defender bump him without a zebra parade. It smacks of WWF, and makes it hard to watch. Lebron is good enough that he doesnt need this kind of help from sterns minions.

the nba really needs to look into its refs duing games like this because lebron is a good player but he has not done any thing yet. he does not deserve some of the calls he gets. the refs almost gave the cavs this game if not for an unfazed melo. everytime melo went to the hole he was geting hammed by lebron, shaq and a couple othert guys. at the other end, if the nuggets breathe wrong on lebron he went to the freethrow line. he was also awful there last night and nobody talks about his freethrow shooting, and how subpar it is for a guy who thinks he should be in a class with kobe and mj. the nba needs to have a talk with it ref before the start to srew up playoff games this year and lebron needs to get in the gym and work on his freethrow shooting before we start callinghim crybaby james instead of king james!!!!!1

Nobody is hating on Lebron. I just hate when people are to busy riding his jock to admit he doesnt have the that killer instinct. Stat wise he untouched. when it comes to having what it takes to win it all. I havent seen it yet Im sorry. it takes more than a triple double to win the big games. case in point last night. You have to have that one player that says. "guys everytime the moment comes when you need some body to kill the oponent. to put that last dagger in them to be an assasin. it will be me." Kobe has it, wade, anthony, hell paul pierce. lebron havent seen it yet.

Peanut...don't even go there....You can't dump this loss on Shaq....he made 9 out of 15 shots (60% FG)...that's huge...he didn't miss 18 shots (like LeBron, who was only 15 out of 33 shots, which is 45%)...if LeBron was at least 50% from the field, they would have won....Shaq missed 6 freethrows...so what? That's like 3 possessions... LeBron turned the ball over 3 times...that's 3 possessions right there... and LeBron also missed 5 free throws...so, Shaq's 6 missed FTs doesn't really matter if you consider that he was 9/15 (18pts), 60%FG, had 1 block, and was one of only two players with a positive +/- rating (Anthony Parker was the other guy) for the Cavs....

Folks...do not misinterpret me...I am not blaming LeBron...but at the same time...I will not Blame Shaq, because this is a team effort, and each player contibuted in this loss....HOWEVER, if I will blame anyone (purely hypothetical) I will put the blame more on the guy with the most touches...because he is the one on whose shoulders the game was placed upon...the buck stops on a particular team's franchise player...and that's the way it has always been.

Wow, great game. Felt lucky on a thursday when I knew the Lakers and Celts would play, that the Cavs/Nugs game was coming on in like ten minutes. LeBron and Melo were putting on a show, somewhere in 3rd they traded jump shots and it dawned on me that watching great players square off is why I watch the game. All the rest of the time I spend is just killing time waiting for games like this one last night. I didn't know Melo had it in him. Great baketball night!

Snoop - grow the hell up why don't you or better yet get off the damm board if you can't carry on a decent conversation.
these multiple comments by you are soooo lame.
anyways, the game was truly exciting last night. you got great players playing some serious ball. but like i've always said, playoff time.....it's a whole new level of the game. the nuggets are good, but the test comes in the playoffs. yeah they prove to us and the lakers they can beat us and let the truth be told they only won by two points in both of the cav's games......so that tells me......these game could of gone either way. the nuggets had a 15 point lead against our cavs but lost it. so again i say, is it really worth the braggin rights???? don't think so.
but now we got jamison, which he will be a great asset to the team. so we'll just sit back and wait to see what happens next. :o)

in the words of red (delonte) "i just love this game"

After watching the game lastnight I knew that there was gonna be numerous Lebron haters on the prowl...looks like Snoop is the ring leader with nothing else better to do I guess. What an ASS Snoop! It was an awesome game and big ups to Melo, Kenyon and Chauncey--- great D fellas...but please let's not forget who the KING is...LEBRON!!! Lebron still outscored Melo and yeah this ended the winning streak for the Cavs but so what! Lebron is still far better looking than the whole Denver squad rolled into one and his ballin skills are untouchable. T...my word is my word...drinks on me at The Game....I lost a bet and a deal is a deal but you best be keeping your trash talk at home...you don't wanna get me started ; )

Everyone thats thinks Lebron is childish can go to hell. Carmelo for the past two years has given up on the court. If you are a NBA star you should a 110% every nite regardless of who you are playing. Not just against to top teams. And another thing what has Carmelo done lately. When was the last time Anthony won an Award of any sort.

You guys makes me sick about who is the best player they all are good in their on way. Don't hate the player hate the game. Last night was great to see two NBA players going at it. That let me know they love what they do and give it their best. I like the Nuggets but love the CAvs so what give credit to whom credit is due. No you can't win evey games but give it your best like its your last and thats what they did. Sit back and enjoy the competition with the platyesr. For you players who hate LeBron or Melo get a life.

Great game Nuggets they always play us tough! But down the stretch I think the Cavs depth would dismantle their _h_t in a series. Especially since we picked-up AJ don't forget JJ, LBJ thats a lot of J's but cant forget Delonte(rhymes), Jamario, Jawad.

Sideshow, Shaq and Boobie this could be TV show with the handshakes and all. "All Purpose" Anthony Parker, Mo' Betta, El' Powe.

Name a better 12-man Roster and don't forget the nicknames. Your turn Haters...
