* exam yesterday

  Hi guys,

just wanted to thank everybody on the forum especially those posting questions, discussing answers and sharing their experience. I wish I joined this forum earlier, not toward the end of my step 1 preparation.

As to the actual exam, the NBME forms and the simulation exam on the USME website are very good road maps. I found all NBMEs very helpful in bringing my knowledge to a shape fit for the actual exam. It took me 3 if not 4 NBMEs to figure out the ways they ask questions and avoid falling for their little traps, especially behavioral questions. I also find that each NBME form has a stress on a different subject (like #7 is anatomy and neuroanatomy; whereas #5 is more immunology ) and in a way each block in the real exam had some subject preference. The questions on the real exam are not exactly the same as NBMEs, but scenarios are similar. I wish all NBMEs had extended version -- was helpful to sit on questions I didn't get right. In the end I remember the questions and concepts I got wrong the best. Overall I feel the exam is similar to NBME 11 and 12.

I am also glad I did USWA tests (I almost didn't because of fatigue and time constraints) -- my exam had some questions addressed in these assessment form.
As many here I also wish to get a high score -- we would see whether it worked out or not :).

Good Luck and Good Knowledge to everybody!

  katy2011,
I also felt there are not enough mol biology questions to practice on. UWORD had very few, UWAS tests had few, and nbme had few. I was not really worried about them since i have some research exprience, but I am not sure I got all the qs right. Some of them were tricky, that I thought it is unfair to ask such a q. But most of the times they were asking a general concept. For instance, to test the downsides of doing a gene therapy using a retrovirus, they will make a case of doing a gene transfer in a pt or in a mouse, then the mouse gets a cancer, and they ask why that can happen.

So I guess one way would be to learn all the treatment modalities that employ mol biology tools and their potential complications. The other thing is to pay attention to molecular biology techniques, but not only to what they are testing but the process itself. For instance when you do a western blot what happens at each step and what is the purpose of each step. Luckily there are not that many techniques. The last thing is good to know how antibodies can be used in diagnostics, again it is important to know the process itself not only the end result.
hope it helps.

  jay3010,
if I could cram in 2 tests I would do nbme 7 and nbme 12. For this forms you can get extended version, so the qs you got wrong - read about each choice out of 5 or 6 they have, and read not only from FA, but maybe from the web to know what the current status is. I didn't do it for couple qs and sure enough I had them on the exam and missed them. For some qs it seemed to me this guys do check FA and put the qs in which are not there. There were some qs I never came across.

  busy08,
I had nettes atlas, it was helpful, but I didn't really like it that much because there are too many annotations. Mostly I used prelab learning modules at http://anatomy.med.umich.edu/musculoskeletal_system/hand.html
they sort of walk you through the images and have nice quizes too

oh, I forgot to mention this great brain anatomy book by Nollte, almost all brain images on nbme forms are from this book. I got a last to last edition for 10 bucks on amazon, consulted it to clarify things, but mailny used it to familiraize myself with images.

congratulations on being done..wish you a high score

Was the Goljan RR Q bank helpful? Is it really necessary to do?

Can u pl confirm that the book in the link below was used by u for neuroanatomy images?

http://www.amazon.com/Human-Brain-Introduction-Functional-Anatomy/dp/03230132...r=8-1-spell

Also if possible do let me know which section is important for images because of time constraints?

Did u have many immunology questions as they told after May 16 all tests are supposed to have many immuno qs?

How many questions of biostats in total? Is kaplan and UW sufficient for it?

Thanks and Good luck.

  rifampicin, thanks.
yes you got the right book. I looked at the images of spine, medulla and midbrain cross-sections. The book also has relly great macropreps on brain steam with all cranial nerves coming out.
I didn't have that many immuno qs. For stat qs were there almost in each block, UWORLD has most of it, but add to it earlier nbme forms.
since i did the goljan q-bank before UWOLD, it was helpful for me. it was helfpful in looking at the material he presents in his book and lectures from a different angle. so i remember the concepts better after doing the qs and i didn't have much trouble with pathology when i was doing the first round of uwold. but if you done uword it might be a bit redundant to do goljan q-bank, not sure. Actually if you noticed Goljan doesn't cover immunology -- and that was the subject i had to do lilttle bit more reading and memorization.
