VIII.  COLUMNS

 

PUGON (Oven), a weekly column in the Bannawag magazine from 1963 to 1968. The contributions of PUGON to the growth of Iloko Literature:

           

1. Helped significantly the formation of GUMIL Filipinas (Gunglo dagiti Mannurat nga Ilokano iti Filipinas; Association of Ilokano Writers in the Philippines) at municipal, city, provincial, national and international levels.  GUMIL Filipinas has chapters in Hawaii, Guam, California, Greece and Hong Kong.  GUMIL Filipinas has chapters in high schools, colleges and universities in Northern Luzon.

2. Published guides to creative writing; guides to great writers  (international) and their writings; also, literary criticisms.

3. Encouraged old and young writers to go into cooperative book publishing.  At this writing, GUMIL Filipinas and its chapters have published about 80 titles of novels, collections of novellas, short stories, poems, essays, plays, and songs.

 

               GUMIL FILIPINAS Kdpy. (GUMIL Filipinas & Others), a monthly literarycolumn in Rimat Magazine, the International Magazine of the Ilokanos, from 2003 – 2004. Major contributions of GUMIL FILIPINAS Kdpy.:

 

1.        Identifies the National Treasures in Philippine Literature in Iloko and other potential writers.

2.        Helps strengthen GUMIL Filipinas and its chapters in the Philippines and abroad.

3.         Provides tips on creative writing and book publishing..

1.  DAGITI BIN-I TI KAPUTOTAN (Seeds of Generation), a novel of more than 400 pages written between 1957 - 1958, holograph on long size newsprint.  Contained 36 chapters with drawings by the author. First ten chapters were destroyed by termites. Now in the care of poet Dr. Godofredo S.  Reyes of Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur. 

 

2.  WHEN FIRST BLADE GROWS, a novel in English of more than 300 pages written between 1956 - 1957, in holograph on regular size white coupon bond paper. Hardbound. The manuscript was in circulation among Hidalgo’s co-workers at the National Power Corporation, Diamond Drilling Investigation, in Norzagaray, Bulacan, between 1959 - 1960.  Manuscript must have been lost when Hidalgo’s family returned from Manila City to Tomana, Rosales, Pangasinan in 1964 (?).  Or the manuscript is in the hand of a relative in Rosales who borrowed it and finally decided to keep it as collector’s  item.

 

3.  POEMS BY SYRAPHIM, collection of less than a hundred amateur poems in English between 1956 - 1958, holograph, with drawings by the poet.
