Report: NYC school employee faked daughter's death

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City school employee has lost her job over accusations she faked her daughter's death so she could take a vacation to Costa Rica.

The Daily News (http://nydn.us/wt3u0K) says a school official became suspicious of the forged death certificate. A special investigator's report says it had different fonts that were misaligned.

Court records show Joan Barnett pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case this fall. She was fired from her job as a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management.

She allegedly told school officials her daughter died in Costa Rica so she could spend 2½ weeks there in March 2010.

A Costa Rican government official later confirmed the document was a fake, noting it dated from 2005.

    Barnett's lawyer declined to comment.

I coworker of mine took time off because his wife passed away. The #$%$ hit the fan when his wife actually called the job up a couple of days later asking if her husband was there.

Ignorance and stupidity is running rampant in America - yet another unfortunate example. We are a great country that deserves better.

If her employer requested a death certificate as proof, she must have been a repeat offender. That would also explain why she used an immediate family member's death rather than a parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, cousin, etc.

What kind of monster could even consider making up such a story. There are a lot of broken hearted people that have REALLY lost their children. And this creature uses it as an excuse for a vacation.
Lady, You need to pray that your lie NEVER comes true.

Sounds like many college students whose grandparents die routinely during midterms and finals. All grandparetns need to know their lives are in danger in mid-March, late May , early October and late November.

How anyone can do such a thing is beyond me. I wouldn't even claim someone was sick, for fear of that person REALLY getting sick. Maybe I'm just weird. Does anyone else think like I do?

It would have been more fun to hear her attempted cover story when it was discovered that her daughter "came back to life" later on.

I knew a guy where I used to work that subscribed to his home town newspaper so if someone died with his last name he could claim they were is relative and get time off. He had a very common name and got a lot of free time off to attend the funerals over the years.
