Below is a simplified version with pictures. Why flash to DD-WRT? Because the D-Link firmware doesn't work like it should. I had been suffering dropped/bad/intermittent connections with my iPad/B&N Color Nook/Google Chrome would only load pages half way.
Switching to DD-WRT fixed all that. Not kidding. If you're having similar troubles, try flashing with DD-WRT. Ready?
GUIDE: Flash firmware on a D-LINK DIR-615 rev. C1 to DD-WRT. Guide written 3/30/2011
A. THINGS NEEDED BEFORE STARTING:
1. Hex editor. (don't need this if you can download my .bin attachment) Get “Neo” from: http://www.hhdsoftware.com/free-hex-editor
Download it and install it. It’s free.
4. Firefox (Chrome users sometimes have issues.) I used Firefox 4.0 to flash and it worked perfectly.
5. Remember or write down this IP address: 192.168.1.1
Your D-Link address was different and will no longer be valid. (192.168.0.1 or whatever you set it for)
B. LET’S BEGIN:
1. Flash your DIR-615 C1 to firmware version 3.10 (even if yours is newer. Flash it back to 3.10). Follow the instructions. If it says wait, then wait. When done move to next step.
** I've attached the edited firmware, so you do not have to Hex edit this if you are using a C1 router. Skip to STEP 5.
C. HEX EDIT THE FIRMWARE (Steps 2-4):
2. Open Neo, the hex editor. Open the DD-WRT firmware file. You’ll see a bunch of gibberish. Scroll down the window to the very bottom. See on the right where it says “AP91-AR9130 blah blah.” We need to put TWO zeroes (or 01 if you’re Russian? Consult original guide) in front of that line. See attachment "neohex.png" How?
3. Line up the row called “00373ff0” and match with two columns “0e” and “0f”. You need to enter “30” in those two columns. 30 will create a ZERO in front of that “AP81 blah blah string.”
4. It should look like attachment "neohex2". Save your firmware file as another name just in case we need to revert back to the original DD-WRT firmware.
D. FLASH
5. Now open Firefox and go to your DIR-615 router console. Flash the new, edited DD-WRT firmware. Wait.
6. At this point, I got some blank webpage that couldn’t load. No problem. Go to http://192.168.1.1 You should see the DD-WRT login page.
7. While screwing with settings, for some reason, certain pages would not load. Turns out this is a cache problem. Go into Firefox and delete your cache history. Close and Reopen Firefox. Problem should be solved. Enjoy your router that actually works.

thanks for loading up the edited bin file, it worked perfect.
Now i need to know what settings to input in the router setup to do a bridge. Itried playing with it but only get that damn limited connectivity message.
I want to have my dir615 recieve the wireless from the verizon router/modem so that my desktop pcs can get internet through the DIR615 ethernet cables 1 and 2 and share files.
Here's what I know. Please let me know what other information you need as I am new to this. I have basic to moderate computer knowledge. I read the wikis but it is a lot to learn in one day
My laptop is physically connected to the verizon router and gets internet. The desktops are physically connected to the DIR615. Both run windows XP Pro and have the tcp/ip settings to automatic
Here's what the laptop is showing (physically connected to Verizon router, not wirelessly)
Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Thanks for posting this. I had some trouble getting openwrt working for my DIR615c1, and your attached image flashed no problem. That said, I am having an issue.
I connect over DSL and I was able to connect to my provider (Status showed connected). The lan dhcp was successfully assigning IPs and all other setting were as default on dd-wrt. But I was not able to connect to the internet.
I was able to ping the IP provided by my ISP (which is a static one), but I could not ping the DNS servers or anything public.
Does anyone know how to debug this issue? I checked the diagnostics and I see some bits of WAN traffic when I request from a browser, so I'm thinking it's blocked from the LAN downstream, but that's it.
Thanks in advance!
PS One last question, I tried to reset the router rescue mode to go back to stock, and I got the .5 second flashing yellow LED, but the IP remained on 192.168.1.1 and it was not responsive. Any thoughts? Could I TFTP it back on?

I have a DIR-615 I would really like to flash to DD-WRT firmware but I cannot see the attached edited file in the post. Where can one find it as I donot have knowledge to convert the file. Thanks, everettg
It is at the bottom of my original post. It's a blue link that says "download" on the right hand side. You cannot see any of my attached pictures, screenshots, or attached firmware file if you are not registered and logged in.

Great instructions! I have flashed dd-wrt onto 4 DIR-615's and 2 DIR-601's. All are working flawlessly! Dramatic improvement over the factory firmware. Keep up the good work!

Hey, I registered for the site just to see the "blue link" but I can't see your .bin attachment. Can anyone post that again?
thanks.
Just like to let everyone know that I was able to upgrade my D-Link DIR-615 C1 from build 14896 dated 08-09-2010 to dd-wrt build 16785 dated 04-09-2011. I have only been running it for half a day but so far no connection issues like I was having before several times per hour.
The reason I did the upgrade was because I was having some intermittent connection slow-downs and connection drops. I disconnected the router for a few hours and went directly thru the cable modem to isolate the problem. I had no errors going straight thru the cable modem, so I figured it was the D-Link DIR-615 C1 that was the problem.
Connect D-Link DIR-615 C1 to laptop (Macbook Pro in my case) via physical Ethernet cable plugged into any of the 4 ports on the D-Link and the ethernet port on the laptop or desktop. Disconnect the wireless connection (in my case on a Mac I turned off the AirPort)
Clicked here with Google Chrome (Firefox version 5 beta did not work correctly with dd-wrt web) http://192.168.1.1/ to get into D-Link DIR-615 C1 web interface.
Administration tab -> "Firmware Upgrade" button and select the firmware you downloaded, and click upgrade.
Wait 2 or 3 minutes.
Power cycle the router when you are sure that it is done upgrading.
Modify all the dd-wrt settings (at least setup WPA2 security) then backup the settings.

Step A-2 is not required. I just flashed from the latest frimware version 3.13NA.
