After months of chipping away at its lead, Google Chrome has finally overtaken Internet Explorer to become most popular web browser worldwide.
Chrome's share of the market rose to 32.8% in the week ending May 20, while Internet Explorer's share of the market dropped to 31.9%, according to new data from StatCounter, via TheNextWeb. This marks the first full week that Chrome has beaten Explorer.
Google's browser had previously topped Explorer for a single day back in March.
Mozilla's Firefox is the third most popular browser with just more than a 25% of the market.

But, talking frankly, Google is the leader after quite short time, if supposed in the past, no one thought that Google will become the leader during such short time...
For the casual user however I think Chrome presents a quick, pretty and useful browser with all the functions they require. The only big gripe with Chrome is its inability to reconnect with failed downloads or uploads. Once the link is broken, you just have to do it all again. Still a superior entry level browser though.
At the integrated agency I work for the entire office uses both browsers - power users on Firefox and browsing for fun on Chrome. The system works.
As for FF, it certiantly deserves 2nd place (or even first) for being the well developed program that it is. But and we'll see what happens because there are far more casual users on the net than power users.
Data from our own web page analytics show the same trend (we see more people visit our site [engineering company] from Chrome browsers than IE browser so far in May).
IE is not and never has been a pioneer when it comes to web browser capabilities and myself and many other web developers continue to rejoice as Microsoft's share of the market dwindles.
2/ Why can m/s sort the bug to update and provide security patches without needing the latest version of IE? If Chrome is the most downloaded and used internet browser it is about time you could free up space and uninstall IE completely. Once again - memory space is at a premium for a netbook.
Firefox is the one that users most often make a conscious decision to install.
IE is by default on the OS. and many installs of Chrome are involuntary i.e the user is installing something else and chrome get's installed.
the only thing google is accomplishing is the further dissemblance of widely adopted legitimately open source browsers (i.e. firefox)
