AutoFocus

AutoFocus

A derivative of Futurosity Aperio Prototype by Robert Ellis, AutoFocus is a Wordpress theme specifically for photographers looking for a simple and elegant way to display their work online.

Demo

All of the photos used in the demo were shot by Ouxu Cheng (used with permission).

Download (version 1.0.1)

Installation

Simply download/extract the zip file and upload the resulting ‘autofocus’ folder to your Wordpress themes folder. Then navigate to APPEARANCE > THEMES and activate AutoFocus.

Usage

Settings

Before uploading new images, go to SETTINGS > MEDIA page. Set the LARGE Max Width  to 800 and the Max Height to 600.

Posting

Simply create a post and use the Wordpress image uploader to attach any high resolution(I recommend images higher than 800px) image(s) to your post. Write the content for your posts, just like any regular blog post. Hit PUBLISH and you’re done! The attached images are placed into the photo area automatically which means no custom fields required! UPDATE: AutoFocus, pulls the last uploaded image for every post, so if you upload 3 images ie: 1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg, then 3.jpg will be used as the main image on the home and single pages.

As an alternative, you may also use the “From URL” option on the Wordpress Media Uploader to link to images hosted elsewhere (flickr, photobucket, etc.) When you post images this way, AutoFocus will automatically generate the custom fields required for the posts to display properly.

You can place images in your post’s content and you can use the gallery shortcode in posts without any issues.

UPDATE: If you are getting weird gallery shortcode CSS in your excerpts on the home page and archives, simply add some text to the Excerpt content area of your post and all should be well.

Layout

This theme also comes with a more generic 1 column Blog layout. To activate it, simply delete or rename the home.php file.

Sidebar

The sidebar for this theme is included as a template for use on an ‘Archives’ page. To activate the sidebar, create a page called ‘Archives’ for example and select the Archives Page Template. This template pulls in the 2 sidebars that sit right on top of each other.

Features

  • Images are automatically placed into posts. No need to use Custom Fields.
  • Psuedo-Image protection. All of the images are protected from download with an invisible layer of HTML that prevents users from Right Clicking and Saving the image directly. Similar to how flickr does it.
  • 2 Front page layouts. Photo Layout (home.php) and Blog Layout (index.php)
  • Works with Wordpress for iPhone (resize images must be turned OFF.)

FAQ

Known Issues

This theme has not been completely browser tested. AutoFocus looks best in Safari and Firefox on Mac ( As all sites do :-) ), but it should hold up pretty well on PCs. IE6 doesn’t like this theme AT ALL so of you absolutely need your site to be consistent on IE6 you probably should go with another theme. I am working on bug fixes for this but at the moment, it is not a major priority.

Versions

  • 1.0.1
    • Adds IE6 & IE7 support (still a work in progress but FAR better than before).
    • Fixes the ‘Leave a comment’ page jump link.
    • Fixes images on the home page using the blog formatted index.php template file.
    • Fixes image ‘floating’ issue in the front page template that broke the image alignment.
    • Improved static navigation arrows for an easier UX.
    • Now pulls the ‘large’ (800px wide) image instead of the full size image for CSS backgrounds on the homepage (Images loads faster as a result).
    • Adds EXIF Data to image attachment pages (However, Shutter Speed does not work).
    • Fixes borders and shadows for Firefox 3.5 and Safari 4.
    • Reworked comments section to include Pings.
    • New 404 template that adheres to the site’s format.
  • 0.9.7
    • Fixes ‘Headers already sent’ error.
  • 0.9.6
    • Fixes removed images on pages.
  • 0.9.5:
    • Removes the first image(the duplicate image) from the post content when it comes before the_content text.
    • Allows for images to show up in the RSS feed.
    • Adds indented sub-page formating in the main menu.
    • Removes grey background for smaller images on single pages.
  • 0.9.4
    • Removes [shortcode] & CSS from single page next/previous excerpts.
  • 0.9.3
    • Fixes ‘From URL’ image errors.
    • Removes [shortcode] & CSS from homepage excerpts.
  • 0.9.1
    • Fixes some IE bugs.
  • 0.9.0
    • First Public release.

    Hi Allan,

This theme is great and very neat CSS file. I was just wondering, is there’s a way to change the amount of posts that show up on the home page before the next page button shows, eg, show 30 posts on the page.

Is there a way I can utilize the tags for my posts? As of right now, I’m not able to search for tags on the archive page. Can I add a tag cloud or anything somewhere?

I was wondering if there was a way to include the javascript code for google analytics in the theme. Usually you place it in the body of the html page but since all the pages are done in php I’m not sure where to place it so I can track my site using analytics. Any suggestions where I could place this?

    Hi Allan,

Thanks a lot for sharing this theme. I really like the theme’s design philosophy. Despite having specific requirements in the way the blog works, it has made photoblogging much easier for me. Great work you have here!

This is a beautifully clean way to present a “365″ photo project, which your template has inspired me to do. THANKS! I love the “neat” (for lack of a better term) front page layout and the minimalistic individual posts.

I wanted to use the GD Star Rating system for visitors to rate the displayed images. I’ve discovered that if the star rating system is used to rate any given post, when that specific post is revisted a scaled down version of the main post image will also be displayed in the content area. For example:

This post has *not* been rated, and the post is displayed properly (there is no content).
This post has been rated, and despite no textual content exists for this post, a dupe appears in the content area, again, which only seems to occur when a post has been rated.

Off-hand, I can’t figure out how to keep the dupe image out of the content area, except for disabling the GD Star Rating widget.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

I’ve uninstalled GD Star System for now, so examples I linked to in the original message will not exhibit the issues I’ve mentioned.

Been using your theme for 6 months and I love it. Just recently it stopped working. Every time a visitor clicks on a blog entry it say “entry not found”. Any tips on what is going on?

      Hi Matt,
That’s pretty weird. It looks like all of your URLs are pointing to http://www.nickelweddings.com/blog/http:/www.nickelweddings.com. What changed before it stopped working? Did you update or install any new plugins? Have you tried Re Saving your permalink structure. I’ve tested AutoFocus with WP 2.8.6 and it seems fine, so I don’t think its the theme. Let me know what happens when you trouble shoot.

Hello Allan, thank you very much for sharing this great template.. now I have a pair of bugs here..

working quite fine on Chrome (been editing and testing so far since yesterday) and everything is ok.. but now I tried adding a comment to a photo, after the photo is displayed through the wp built in gallery (its my first time trying this gallery, last time I worked in a blog was about 2 years ago!).. so I dont know if I’m making a mistake on the gallery or if its a bug on the template.
The comments show good on the “main post”, but when the post has this gallery, and I open one photo on the gallery (showing the exif data) and add a post, this doesn’t show, and it shows on the administrator as published.

on the other hand, just made quite some changes on the css and worked fine on Chrome and IE8 but in Firefox doesnt show ANY change at all :-(

well thank you for your time, sorry not online, still working the site locally

update: I could manage to make it work on Firefox, was a mistake of mine… classic, one ‘ missing..

but the bug of the comments is still there. No comments shown when posted on a photo opened from a Gallery..

thanks in advance for any help

Hi, we use the Autofocus theme for our foodblog. It works great! I just wonder if you have any ideas on how to make a thumbnail appear at the bottom, next to the Browse Older & Newer links. I’m not sure if you ever intended it to be that way, but since it is a photo blog theme it seems reasonable.
Also wonder how to remove the text under the comment (You may use these HTML tags and attributes …), I understand css/html if someone just gives me a hint on where to look.
    Much appreciated!

I just added this functionality to my Autofocus install!
Its the one thing that I thought was missing from this theme. Check my post out about this very thing and my photoblog where it’s live. Its actually very simple change, so if you like I’ll share the code required to make it happen.

Allan…simply awesome work mate! Thank you very much for all of your hard work.

We just started using your theme about a week ago and we love it. Since the blogs inception we’ve been using the Ajaxed Wordpress plugin and the plugins functionality was working fine before we installed AutoFocus. However, ever since we installed your theme we are noticing that the Ajaxed plugin is not working any longer on the front page or within the posts. While the plugin is activated, it does not break the theme or the blog, but all of the Ajax-like functionality is not there, which is the primary benefit of the plugin. This may be a needle in a haystack issue but have you had any experience in trying to get AutoFocus to work with the Ajaxed WP plugin? Anyway, if you get a chance, let me know if you know of any fixes and I’ll continue to try to troubleshoot as well. Thanks in advance!
