FROM THE PRINCIPAL

RECITAL CHOIR

Congratulations on our choir’s recent performance at the choral festival at Monstalvat. These performances require a great deal of organisation and effort. Firstly, to the children, congratulations on your dedication commitment and enthusiasm as it clearly shows when you perform. Secondly, thank you to Jenny Cranston and all of her efforts to make the choir look sensational. Thirdly, thanks to our wonderful music teacher Kate Stewart who continues to sacrifice time with her own family to provide experiences for the choir children on weekends. This weekend they are off to the Boroondara Eisteddfod. I hope they have a great day!

PREP CONVERSATIONS

I often wander into the Prep classrooms to have a chat to the children. The conversations we have are always interesting and fun. Of course they are quite eager to share a story, a thought, or an event that has recently happened. Some of the recent comments include:

“I threw up last night”

“I have a sore ear”

“My mum cooked me spaghetti because he likes it too”

“I have a new train and it’s the fastest one”

“I don’t have a cough”

It certainly makes my day to walk through and see what they are up to.

NAPLAN

This week our year 3 and 5 children completed their NAPLAN tests. Whilst these tests are important to our Governments, both State and Federal, they are not used by classroom teachers to inform their teaching. Results are not released until the end of Term 3 rendering much of the information about the children useless.

We do however get a snapshot of how your child performs in a “test” situation. We also use the results to help verify teacher judgements and compare the results with our other forms of assessment. We assess children on a very regular basis and track their performance as they move through the school. We use this assessment to inform our teaching so that we can design curriculum to move children forward from their point of need.

The way the tests are designed means that if your child performs poorly, the scaling shows them performing much worse than is really the case. It’s the same if your child performs well it seems to exaggerate the results to show them much higher than they really are. It can be a fairly blunt way to measure student performance.

Have a great weekend

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

IT’S ‘FOOTY CARD’ SEASON

With the AFL Season in full swing – we are again in the midst of our own ‘Footy Card’ season at Greeenhills. We know that our students love to compare the who’s, what’s, how’s and when’s of the players and teams, however the cards can become a problem when children start to swap them.

We love that many of our students from all levels of our school have a shared interest which they can talk about at recess and lunchtime; however ‘swapping’ Footy Cards is beginning to come up as a concern for children and teachers.

Please discourage your child from swapping cards while at school.  It’s nigh impossible for us to sort out where their precious cards have ended up and sometimes, the kids don’t know who the other child is that they ‘swapped’ with.  We don’t want to have to enforce a ‘Footy Card Free Zone’ at school because they are a great conversation starter, and even we teachers love to have a look and a chat at the various collections that are brought to school.

DRAFT UNIFORM POLICY – COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

School Policies are reviewed as per the set schedule, usually either a 3 or 5 year cycle. The Policies and Submissions Sub-Committee of School Council are in the process of reviewing our school’s Uniform Policy this term.

The DRAFT Uniform Policy has been on our website for 2 weeks and will be taken off tomorrow, Friday 17th May for the next stage of review.  The Policies and Submissions Sub-Committee will use all feedback sent to the school to make recommendations to School Council in order to finalise the policy.  Thank you to those parents who took the time to read the draft policy and sent in feedback for the Sub-Committee to consider.  You opinions and ideas are important to us.  If you have some last minute feedback – please follow the advice below.

The process for feedback is as follows:

  1. EMAIL - Feedback can be sent to SCHOOL COUNCIL via email at greenhills.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au.  When emailing – please include ‘School Council – Uniform Policy’ in the subject line – that way it will make its way to the right committee.
  2. WRITTEN FEEDBACK can be handed in at the office via your child, addressed to ‘School Council re Uniform Policy’.
  3. Your name must be on the feedback for it to be considered in the process.  This also means a School Council member is able contact you in case we need to clarify your suggestion, or wish to gather more information from you.
  4. When offering feedback, it’s always helpful to provide practical alternatives or suggestions.

SCHOOL UNIFORM - JUMPERS

It’s getting very chilly!  Please ensure that your child/ren have their school jumper on every morning.  The mornings are very cold, and although many of our senior students seem to prefer wearing shorts, a jumper will help to warm them up just that little bit.

There are also many students from across the school who have been wearing jumpers other than our bottle green school uniform.  If you have had a washing machine disaster or their jumper got stuck on the line during a storm, please make sure that you send along a note for their teacher explaining why your child is out of uniform.

There are also MANY lost jumpers at the office which are un-named. Lost property which is named is passed back to your child via their classroom.  If you are missing a jumper (or three) please come and have a look in the growing pile at the office.

NAPLAN 2013

NAPLAN 2013 is complete.  We have a couple of catch up sessions tomorrow for students who were away when the assessments were administered.

Each Year 3 and 5 student were sent home with and information pamphlet for parents on Tuesday.  If you did not receive one – please contact your child’s teacher.  NAPLAN results are usually available to schools in late September – this is also when we receive your child’s individual results which we will send home with your child.

Have a lovely weekend.

IMPORTANT NOTICES

EARN AND LEARN

We are now Registered for Earn and Learn and our school coordinator is Karen Martin. Please send along all earn and learn points to the office. Here is some information about the program….

The Woolworths Earn & Learn program enables schools and early learning centres throughout Australia to earn educational resources simply through the school community shopping at Woolworths. Last year, the program provided 720,000 pieces of educational equipment to more than 12,500 schools and early learning centres. From Monday 8th April until Sunday 9th June 2013, when you shop at Woolworths you will be given a Woolworths Earn & Learn Point. There’ll be one Woolworths Earn & Learn Point for every $10 spent, excluding cigarettes, liquor and gift cards. Collect these Woolworths Earn & Learn Points and your school will be able to redeem these for educational resources.

NOTE FROM KAREN MARTIN

Thanks to eveyone who has been collecting the stickers from Woolworths. Last week I spent HOURS putting all the stickers on to the sheet and I couldn't believe how many have already been collected!!

You can bring your stickers and sheets (you don't have to wait until the sheets are completed) and put them in the box at the Office, or we have a box at St Helena Woolworths near theself-service registers.

We only have another 4 weeks ( until June 9) to collect as many as we can so lets make a huge effort to get as many stickers as possible.

PSYCHOLOGIST AT GREENHILLS

A psychologist is now available to the students, parents, teachers and community of Greenhills. Laura Boscaglia is an experienced psychologist who will available at the school on Thursday via an appointment. Laura has extensive experience working with children and is looking forward to helping out in the Greenhills school community.

Laura can assist with in a wide variety of areas to provide practical ideas and solutions that children can use at school, home and in the community. Laura believes that the primary years are important in a child’s development and provide an opportunity to learn and practice good thinking habits.

A referral from a GP is required to receive 6 psychology sessions which can be bulkbilled through Medicare (up to 10 sessions in some circumstances). Parents are welcome to contact Laura to  chat or ask questions and/or arrange an appointment on 0421 800 165 or lauraboscaglia@gmail.com

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY, 24 MAY 2013

Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking about walking!

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

-          Walking with them the whole way to school

-          If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop

-          If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 24 May 2013!

SCIENCE AT GREENHILLS

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT BATS?

Bats are often a misunderstood group of mammals. These delightful and fascinating creatures are very common if you know were to look for them. On a quiet evening especially near water, you can hear (though not easily see) them as they fly about in search of their evening meal. They have a distinctive soft call that they make as they fly around.

If you are lucky enough to be near the Yarra Park in Ivanhoe on dusk, you will witness the flight of over

10,000 large flying foxes as they depart their daily resting grounds in search of their nightly fruit, pollen and nectar feed. Their narrow highway in the sky overhead is one of my favourite sights.

Did you know that one quarter of all the mammals in the world are bats? These flying mammals range in size from the 1kg flying fox with a wingspan of 1.5m to tiny micro bats that only weigh 3 grams and live off insects.

There are many species of bats to be found around here. We help them live by protecting existing bush and revegetating areas with native plants. Remember that the use of insecticides can poison the bats who feed off the insects we are trying to kill. You can also help to protect them by keeping your cat inside at night.

Some bats live in the hollows of dead trees and will use special bat nest boxes where provided. The City of Whittlesea has bat detectors that you can borrow and they will provide information on the bats that are to be found around here, as well as information on where you can purchase bat nesting boxes.

So next time you are outside in the evening and hear a soft new noise on the breeze, stop and listen and look carefully as it could be a bat.
