Jan 24 In Assam, around seventy-two per cent voters exercised their franchise for the fourth and final phase of Panchayat election being held in Darrang district today. Our correspondent reports that the polling, which ended at 4.00 this afternoon, was almost peaceful. AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that voting started lately in some centers due to the inclement weather and shivering cold. It, however, picked up during the day after improvement of the weather to a little extent. Electoral fortunes of 3,659 contesting candidates are to be decided in today's polling. Members in 14 Zilla Parishad, 75 Anchalik Parishad and 750 Gaon Panchayat constituencies besides 75 presidents of Gaon Panchayats are to be elected through this final round of polling. Counting of votes for all the four phases of Panchayat polls in the State will be taken up on Monday next. Panchayat election is being held in the State after six years.
