Fourth-Place Medal

U.S. women’s eight celebrates gold medal by throwing coxswain into the water

The U.S. women's eight rowing team won its second straight gold medal on Thursday.  Coxswain Mary Whipple led the women to the win by yelling, cajoling, sometimes even cussing at them to get them across the finish line first. Now that they have the gold, how does this group of intelligent, accomplished women retaliate? By keeping up with tradition and throwing her in the water, of course.

Whipple is 5-foot-3 and weighs around 100 pounds. She didn't stand much of a chance against the eight rowers, whose height starts at 5-foot-9.

(Getty)Wow, they made her catch air. If coxswain tossing was an Olympic sport, they would likely win that, too.

Splash! Don't worry, Whipple came back up and celebrated the win with her teammates.

You seem to enjoy saying coxswain Lae!

Didn't know that. I was a coxswain in college...for a short while. The coach didn't give us (coxswains) any instruction in how to be a coxswain. I took time off from study to try to learn up on being a coxswain. Then, when he wanted us to weight train and run with the rowers, I was done. I'm a swimmer and not a runner. I'll swim all day long but hate to run.

Why isn't it easy to find out the women's rowing team members names?? Whipple didn't do it... alone!!! Dig and dig and dig and still. Who are they??!! Sheesh. over it

You can easily google it. It's not that hard. This article is about Whipple being tossed in the water, not about the other girls.

I am not sure I understand the uniforms . . . why are they not bikinis like the beach volleyball? I understand why they are all blonde, it is a watersport, like swimming or water polo, it seems to be a wealthy / white people sport . . . . it also is a sport that requires core strength, and euro people have longer torsos than people of African descent, who have longer legs and are more suited generally for running and jumping sports . . .

Very happy for them, but does this event really need a coxswain? I be irritated if there was someone in my face yelling at me to row harder and faster. B***h, i'm trying to row harder so #$%$ The coxswain is extra weight that slows you down.
