Meet The Senators Who Voted Against The Franken Amendment

What's Your Reaction?

I think that all homo sapiens can understand how the mere thought of an organization that receives government money through contract mechanisms being tangentially involved in setting up a fake tax shelter for a fake pimp and his fake prostitution ring of fake prostitutes can justifiably lead to lawmakers going absolutely cross-eyed with white-hot, impotent rage. But what happens when a similarly taxpayer-endowed contractor attempts to cover up employee-on-employee gang rape by locking up the victim in a shipping container without food and water and threatening her with reprisals if she report the incident? Somehow, it doesn't engender the same level of anger!

Credit new Senator Al Franken however, for introducing an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill that would punish contractors if they "restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court." You'd think that this would be a no-brainer, actually, but that didn't stop Jeff Sessions from labeling Franken's effort a "political attack directed at Halliburton." Franken, of course, pointed out that his amendment would apply broadly, to all contractors, because otherwise, 'twould be a bill of attainder, right? Right?

Franken's amendment ended up passing, 68-30. Here's a list of the Senators who showed broad support for Roman Polanski by voting against it:

Alexander (R-TN)
Barrasso (R-WY)
Bond (R-MO)
Brownback (R-KS)
Bunning (R-KY)
Burr (R-NC)
Chambliss (R-GA)
Coburn (R-OK)
Cochran (R-MS)
Corker (R-TN)
Cornyn (R-TX)
Crapo (R-ID)
DeMint (R-SC)
Ensign (R-NV)
Enzi (R-WY)
Graham (R-SC)
Gregg (R-NH)
Inhofe (R-OK)
Isakson (R-GA)
Johanns (R-NE)
Kyl (R-AZ)
McCain (R-AZ)
McConnell (R-KY)
Risch (R-ID)
Roberts (R-KS)
Sessions (R-AL)
Shelby (R-AL)
Thune (R-SD)
Vitter (R-LA)
Wicker (R-MS)

ADDENDUM: It's been pointed out to me that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce lobbied against the Franken amendment as well:

Republicans point out that the amendment was opposed by a host of business interests, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and applies to a wide range of companies, including IBM and Boeing.

I guess we must cover up crimes like rape in order to save capitalism.

Every woman should not only email their senators if they voted against this, but they should thank Al Franken for putting this amendment out there. He will take emails form out of state folks. I live in AZ and will again email McCain and Kyl to express my extreme displeasure at their votes against women.

I am happy to see that neither of my senators (one D, one R) are on this shameful list. We need a list of the Repubs who voted *for* the Franken amendment--too bad they're a minority in their own party.

Anybody who has been complaining about President Obama lately should read that list and note how Senator McCain voted.

Wow. Three-fourths of Republican senators and the C of C support the right of the corporation to protect rapists from rape victims seeking justice. Even as I puke my socks up, I am so not surprised. That should be the lede in every newspaper and on every news broadcast for the next 24 hours.

Here is a letter I sent yesterday to "my" Senators in GA & TN:

Saxby Chambliss:

Even in the U.S. of 2009, when words like "shocking", "reprehensible", and "shameful" have lost their impact, your opposition earlier this week to the Franken amendment was shocking and morally offensive to me. Shame on you! I am a 52-year-old white male who has practiced law in GA for 27 years. I live on the outskirts of Chattanooga. I have become quite jaded by first-hand experience of the lengths to which wealth and power will go to keep the less privileged and powerful in their place. And yet, even though I expect nothing good to come from the representatives of wealth and power, I am appalled at your opposition to the Franken amendment.
I have never in my life written to a politician, but I am so profoundly offended by your action that I cannot remain silent. Today, I am ashamed to admit that I am a native of Georgia.

Sincerely,
.........................

I'm an optimist, but, OK, I'm also lazy.

I'm less interested in the 30 Repubicans who (predictably) opposed the amendment than I am their more courageous Republican brothers & sisters who voted for it.

So who were they? I can pick out Sens. Collins & Snow. Who else? Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

A worthy question. Anybody know the answer?

Bennett UT, Collins ME, Grassely IA, Hatch UT, Hutchison TX, LeMieux FL, Lugar IN, Murkowski AK, Snowe ME, Voinovich OH.

Clearly, we need registration drives in these states.

Then get out the vote.

It's not enough of those doing God's Work to have intercourse with the defence and state departments. Now they want to do the hired help too? Must be Gods will.

Some years ago, a survey revealed that 60% of American men said they WOULD commit rape if they knew they would not be caught or punished. I guess a lot of them work for Blackwater and Halliburton. No surprise.

You mean a bill like that wasn't passed UNANIMOUSLY? Why is a bill like this even NECESSARY?

Reply    Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:16 AM on 10/09/2009

Why is anyone surprised? At this point, any pretense that the Republican leadership party is not chock full of misogynists, not to mention the rampant bigotry, is truly laughable. Thank you for posting this list. One of my senators will be hearing from me. Of course, little will it matter with someone of his mindset and limited perception. Oh well.....I do it anyway.
