ITVS is the largest program source of independent programming for U.S. public television. ITVS supports both American and international independent producers through funding, production and communication services to bring their work to public broadcasting. ITVS produces the Emmy Award-winning PBS primetime series Independent Lens and also distributes work to major PBS icon series, including Frontline, POV, and American Experience. ITVS also produces the 26-week Global Voices for PBS’s digital World Channel and True Stories a series of American documentaries for international public broadcasters.
ITVS seeks qualified candidates for the position of Vice President of Production. This person will provide leadership and expertise in the production, contracting, packaging and delivery of independent documentaries to public broadcasting systems. This person must have experience and understanding of high quality independent media, and facilitating work for television broadcast and on new media platforms. The candidate must be committed to working with media that serves public interests—specifically uniting the vision and voices of independent producers with the mandate of public broadcasting. This person will play a key role in representing ITVS to partners and leveraging support for the organization within the public television system and among key constituents.
The Vice President of Production reports to the President and works closely with ITVS’s programming department, business affairs team, interactive team, and distribution arm. We seek an individual with strong leadership and management skills who is positive, can-do, articulate, entrepreneurial, a clear and critical thinker with sound judgment and excellent problem/analysis/resolution capabilities, a strategist, and an expert in broadcast and digital production.
Qualifications:
• Minimum ten years in a senior leadership position in public or commercial media environment. • Extensive knowledge in the fields of independent filmmaking, television and/or public broadcasting. • Deep understanding of and experience with traditional broadcast production as well as digital formats. • Comprehensive experience with contracts, rights, project management and packaging. • Demonstrated ability to work on the ground and at 30,000 feet and communicate with media and non-media professionals. Ability to manage and oversee complex projects in a team environment. • Proven leadership and management skills. • Ability to manage and oversee complex projects in a team environment. • Exceptional oral and written communication skills. • Dedicated and service-minded. • A high level of integrity and professional presence.
Responsibilities:
• Works closely with President and senior leadership team to set and execute overall strategic and operational directions for ITVS. • Provide leadership and on-the-ground oversight of ITVS’s production activities, including project management of over 60+ domestic programs, and 30+ international programs annually. • Manage high-level production team to ensure delivery of high quality programs to broadcasting and digital distribution networks. • Mentor, train, and share knowledge with ITVS staff. • Serve as liaison between the with independent and public television communities.
