super-insulation

A construction technique that insures maximum heating and/or cooling efficiency. Super-insulation techniques include insulation of walls to R-40 standards, ceilings to R-60 standards, air-tight construction, and the use of shutters on all windows that face south, among many others.

Super-insulation is applied to conserve energy, but it doesn't necessarily conserve cost. There is an initial cost involved in applying super-insulation techniques in construction, and there may be ongoing costs as well. A building's owner may need to maintain circulation systems capable of greater air purifying efficiency than normally insulated buildings. Super-insulated buildings can become incubators for various types of molds and airborne diseases, and this building technique is believed to be a significant contributor to sick building syndrome when it is not combined with superior air purification. Air filtration is only one of several possible ongoing costs involved in maintaining the efficiency of a super-insulated structure.
