change format to $k

Hi all - I have figures that I want shown in $000 (as in $435,000 would should as $435k or $1,250,000 would show as $1,250k) - can anyone suggest a format that would do this and will also change when the number goes up a digit. I am currently using [="$"&LEFT(A1,3)&"k"], however this doesn't change to a $#,##0k when the number in A1 goes above a million.

As alway, many thanks in advance for any help!
