Parminder vaults to a new high

AIMING HIGH: Dharminder Kumar who won the boys’ javelin event at the National Youth athletics championships in Madurai on Friday.

MADURAI: For one who took up the sport in a big way only last year, pole vaulter Parminder Kumar Patel of Uttar Pradesh has delivered some impressive performances already. His efforts in the junior National championship at Mysore in November 2008 (4.30m) and the National schools championship at Kochi in January this year (4.20m) are evidence of that.

On the opening day of the National youth athletics championships at the MGR Stadium here on Friday, Parminder added one more to his kitty by vaulting to 4.30m and also created the meet’s first National record. The U.P. lad broke the record held by Virender Singh of Gujarat (4.20m).

Tied with Haryana’s Jitender after both cleared 4.20m in their first attempts, Parminder pipped Jitender by jumping 4.30m in his first try to bag the gold.

Monika sizzles

Late in the evening, Monika Athare of Maharashtra ran the 3,000m in a time of 10m 09.15s to break the National record held by B. Uma Maheshwari of Andhra Pradesh (10:09.46s). Her Statemate Puja Varhade finished second.

Dharminder Kumar of Uttar Pradesh heaved the javelin to 62.21m to finish first while Vikash Singh of Delhi (61.73m) came second.

Inderjeet established a new meet record in the 5,000m (14:58.40), erasing the one held by Naresh Malik of Haryana.

The results: Boys: 100m: 1. Bhagwant Singh (Pun) 11.08s, 2. Manish (Har) 11.12s, 3. M.M. Sreeraj (Ker) 11.21s.

5,000m: 1. Inderjeet (U.P.) 14:58.40 (NMR, OR Naresh Malik (Har) 15:47.05), 2. Rahul Kumar (Guj) 15:01.24, 3. Yogendra Kumar (UP) 15:16.68.

Pole vault: 1. Parminder Kumar Patel (U.P.) 4.30m (NR; OR Virender Singh 4.20m), 2. Jitender (Har) 4.30m, 3. J. Preeth (TN) 3.80m.

Javelin: 1. Dharminder Kumar (U.P.) 62.21m, 2. Vikash Singh (Del) 61.73m, 3. Praveen Bhoi (Ori) 59.87m.

Girls: 100m: 1. Ranjita Mahanta (Ori) 12.38s, 2. Rebecca Jose (Kar) 12.40s, 3. V. Swathi Prabha (Ker) 12.83m.

3,000m: 1. Monika Athare (Mah) 10:09.15 (NR; OR B. Uma Maheswari, AP, 10:09.46s), 2. Puja Varhade (Mah) 10:14.50s, 3. M.D. Thara (Ker) 10:43.87s.
