Palin release, reaction

Posted: Friday, August 29, 2008 12:05 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The McCain campaign’s release on Palin:
"U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president. Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington. Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us -- Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

"In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the 'bridge to nowhere' that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.
As the head of Alaska's National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

"Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today."

The Obama campaign’s response:
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same," said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.

More from Athena Jones and Lee Cowan: The Obama campaign is pointing out that the town where Sarah Palin served as mayor, Wasilla, AK, has a population of just 8,000, which is less than 1/20th the size of his state senate district (when he was a state legislator). Wasilla is near Anchorage.  2004 Census estimate put the population at 7,738. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said it was just "a fact"

Other Dem reaction:
CHUCK SCHUMER: "After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real role of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."

Some GOP reaction:
HUCKABEE: "Sarah Palin is pleasant surprise for those of us who had hoped that Senator McCain would pick a principled and authentic conservative pro-life leader and Sarah Palin is.  As a Governor, she also brings an important balance of understanding of the critical domestic issues that are needed and that the Democrats have ignored in their ticket.  Governor Palin is smart, authentic, tough, and a dynamic choice that will remind women that if they are not welcome on the Democrat's ticket, they have a place with Republicans."

GREG MUELLER, president of CRC Public Relations, former senior adviser to the presidential campaigns of Pat Buchanan ('92 and '96) and Steve Forbes (2000): "Conservatives will be thrilled with this pick.  Governor Palin is a down the line mainstream conservative who will energize the base and reach across party lines attracting women voters, independents and blue collar Democrats.  With almost one fourth of women voters undecided, Senator McCain has made a brilliant choice by picking a blue collar conservative woman who will excite the Republican Party and lay out the welcome matt for independents and disaffected Clinton voters.  Governor Palin is a terrific contrast to the all Washington ticket of Obama-Biden.  She is a wonderful contrast to Biden, and a truly outside the beltway pick.  Looks like the glass ceiling has been broken not by Hillary Clinton but by Senator McCain and Governor Palin."

*** UPDATE *** ROMNEY: "Governor Palin's story is one that all Americans will find inspiring. She's a Washington outsider with a commitment to the conservative principles that will make our nation stronger. I look forward to campaigning for Senator McCain, Governor Palin and Republicans all across the country."

McCain is pandering to "angry" Hillary supporters. He's hoping that they're so angry that they won't notice Palin is anti-choice and that McCain himself is not only anti-choice but also opposes protection of women's rights to equal pay for equal work. Who knows? It just might work. You'll never go broke underestimating the rationality of American voters.
Oh, man, has the Republican Party misread the Hillary vote. Hillary Clinton fought for universal healthcare for years, won a Senate race, almost won a bruising primary, just gave a speech that was better than any man's at that convention...and they compare HER to a former beauty queen with less than two years experience as a Governor? This is just TOO funny!
How stupid does he think we women are?  The only reason he has picked her is because he thinks women are like cattle, and he will be able to herd our votes because she is a woman.  She has less experience than Obama, that is like putting a family doctor who is 2 years out of med school as Chief Surgeon of a major Hospital!  It totally demonstrates the lack of respect McCain has for women and the fact he thinks our intelligence level is even less.
Well, I want to thank you Mr. John McCain, you have just made my decision for me.  I was going to exercise my right to NOT vote in this election because I just couldn't back Obama's lack of experience into the white house.  However, I can not risk my vote not counting and someone who has been a state governor for 2 years to possibly become president. But now, this Hillary supporter will be Voting OBAMA/BIDEN in 08.
GOV. SARAH PALIN, I KNOW HILLARY CLINTON, HILLARY CLINTON HAS 35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE, HILLARY CLINTON IS THE CHAMPION FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE, YOU SARAH PALIN ARE NO HILLARY CLINTON!
Yeah Romney applauds the choice... He's running for 2012 afterall.... Cindy is in trouble.... McCain will have more lunch meetings with Sarah now......for the bikini contest..
"Looks like the glass ceiling has been broken not by Hillary Clinton but by Senator McCain and Governor Palin."

Read that Hillary supporters. They are using you all!! Be smarter than this, vote your interests.
I don't think Hillary's base would appreciate Ms. Palin taking credit for HER 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling.

NOT THIS TIME!!
what a joke young lady got her grand father. look at what when GOP think evil to spoil dems convenstion. God+ angree at gop and trying to erace theri own convention.

MSNBC post this.
Bob Barr is looking better.  What is wrong with John McCain???  He had two terrific contenders in Romney and Huckabee and picks Sarah Palin.  Maybe he is too old for the office; I cannot support this ticket as a Romney supporter.  Governor Huckabee at least has been truly tested and shown he, too, had a lot of support.  I am voting for Bob Barr as of today, though I know it will probably mean 4 years of Barack Obama.
Oh COME ON!!!! How stupid does the GOP think Americans and women are? They speak of experience and then do THIS??? To the women of America, THIS IS AN INSULT to our intelligence. HE WILL NOT GET THIS HILLARY SUPPORTER!!!
Absolutely incredible! What a pathetic, cynical, wasted and worthless pick. There goes the Republican's misguided executive and foreign policy "experience" argument.  Can't wait for the VP debates.  Biden will have her in tears.
Hey Guys,
Brush up on your history.  This is not the first pick of a woman for Vice-President.  The Democrats did this years ago.
The only possible reason to pick Palin over Pawlenty would be the fact that she is a woman and they are hoping to pick up the PUMAs, all 60 of them.  Good luck with that.  McCain is 72 today and has a history of cancer and severe emotional trauma for five years.  Do you really want someone whose executive experience involves two years as governor of a 600,000 person state and who has NO FOREIGN POLICY EXPERIENCE OF ANY KIND to be the one backing him up, ready to lead on day one, yada, yada, yada.  But hey, she's pretty.  Isn't she also being investigated up there for abuse of power/cronyism issues?
Walk off home run. A lot can happen between now and November, but barring a major scandal or big-time gaff John McCain will be the next president of the United Staes. Sarah Palin will ascend closer to the American presidency than any woman ever has, and given McCain's age, in my opinion stands a very good chance of becoming our first woman president.
LET US GET THIS RIGHT.  BECAUSE HILLARY DID NOT  WIN MCCAIN THINKS HE CAN THROW A WOMAN INTO THE MIX AN WOMEN WILL RUSH OUT AND VOTE FOR THIS WOMAN WHO IS AGAINST  WOMEN'S RIGHTS?

THIS WOMAN IS NO HILLARY CLINTON NOT BY A LONG SHOT AND WILL NOT BE REWARDED ACCORDINGLY

THIS WOMAN HAS 5 CHILDREN AND ONE WITH A SEVERE ILLNESS JUST WHAT HAPPENS TO AMERICA IF SHE HAS TO STEP IN?  NO TO MENTION HER INEXPERIENCE

WE ARE TO GIVE THE 2ND MOST IMPORTANT JOB IN OUR NATION TO A WOMAN WITH NO EXPERIENCE?

THIS IS AN EMBRASSMENT TO ALL WOMEN

JOHN MCCAIN LISTENED TO THE HILLARY DISENTERS AND MADE A HUGE MISTAKE, HUGE

THIS IS 2008 AND INSULTING TO ALL WOMEN
I absolutely can not wait until Sen. Biden wipes the floor with the beauty queen!
Wow. I think this pick is great for the democrats. How can the republicans argue that obama has no experience when their own VP has none at all.
Even though she is a women, she is a pro-life conservative. I for one want Clinto to be the first president or VP, not anyone else.
Twenty-five years later, the Republicans finally answer the Geraldine Ferraro challenge.

Faced with a Republican juggernaut in Ronald Reagan,  a desperate Mondale sought to get some traction with a woman who was a first-term legislator.  After last night's speech, I suspect McCain's success will rival Mondale's. Let's be clear:  Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton, despite McCain's obvious motive in choosing her.

If he intended to pick up the disgruntled HRC supporters, the plan looks a bit flawed:  1) after last night (& the convention as a whole), there aren't that many left; 2) while no Dan Quayle, Palin is no HRC; 3) most will recognize that the Repubs had no women candidates for Pres. (unlike the Dems in 84-I think that was the year Shroeder ran); and, finally, 4) what does this do to a 72 yo McCain's experience attack on BO, if he chooses someone this unexperienced to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Let the games begin!!
The Obama camp needs to also state that Palin is under investigation! Another dirty politician from the GOP's! Can't wait to hear how they'll spin this! Also, where's her "experience"? Being a heartbeat away from the Presidency, shouldn't she have some "experience"????????? Oh, that's right, only Democrats need experience. McFossil will train her! Does this announcement take away the fact that McFossil is ANOTHER year older today? He's 72 today; put him out to pasture!
And Barack Obama is trying to put a former "community organizer" into the office of the President.  Barack "organized" a community.  Palin governed one.  Pot, meet kettle.

Did Palin work as a lifeguard in high school?  Oh my god, John McCain is trying to put a former lifeguard a heartbeat away from the Presidency!  What a dishonest criticism.  Sarah Palin is a Governor with more executive experience than Barack Obama.
Sarah Palin seems nice enough but the pick reminds me of Harriet Miers.  Is she capable enough to deal with national security if something happens to McCain?
BY making this choice John McCain has proven that he is not fit to become the nest President. By not honestly taking into consideration his age and the possible problems it could present, and choosing a person that clearly is not ready to step in, and become President, he has showed he is desparate and will try anything to win. In his selfish desire to win he has said to the American people I DON"T CARE ABOUT YOU OR THIS COUNTRY.
"Looks like the glass ceiling has been broken not by Hillary Clinton but by Senator McCain and Governor Palin."
*******

The way to entice Hillary's people over is not to insult Hillary
"GREG MUELLER, president of CRC Public Relations, former senior adviser to the presidential campaigns of Pat Buchanan ('92 and '96) and Steve Forbes (2000")

Boy, there is so much success in that resume I might just have to take this guy seriously.
She was born in Idaho ... wonder who will be the first to ask her how you spell "potato" ....

It is a terrible thing to lose one's mind.
Picking a person with ZERO experience a hearbeat away from the presidency ia great first executive decision, John!
John McCain is so predicatable. Of course, after riding around in a golf cart with Bush, Sr., McCain would pick Sarah Palin, a former Miss Alaska contestant, and the female equivalent of Dan Quayle, to add some youth and eye candy to the ticket ala' Dan (He Looks Like Redford) Quayle. Sarah Palin, a former Miss Alaska contest Miss Congeniality with modest academic credentials, but who has a very strong athletic background. Also, since her husband works for the oil industry, the Texas GOP may give its blessing.

Like Dan Quayle, she is not an academic super star.

Like Dan Quayle, she had success as a high school athlete.

Like Dan Quayle, she is very conservative, pro-gun, and very pro-life.

Like Dan Quayle, she achieved early political success.

Like Dan Quayle, she is a relative unknown nationally.

Like Dan Quayle, she is youthful and good looking.

Like Dan Quayle, she will be added to an elder Presidential ticket in order to add some youth, charisma and visual appeal.

Sarah Palin over Meg Whitman (E-bay founder), Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty?  Well, it makes as much sense as Dan Quayle.
The Obama campaign’s response: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency"

Ouch!!! But hey, this is the first thing that came to my mind when it offically came out. Truth hurts McSame.
