METIS CULTURE 1721-1725



The Spanish launch a mounted army from New Mexico against the Metis in Indian Territory.
The Metis and their Indian brothers destroy this army, sparing 6-7 Spanish.
The Metis told the Indians just to shoot their horses and their armor will weight them down.

providing a base for the Metis and Coureurs des Bois to conduct expeditions into the interior.

Jean Baptiste Benard de La Harpe's led an expedition to the Karankawa homeland in Texas but the Spanish built a mission Espiritu Santo de Zuniga not far from the former French Fort St. Louis.   The settlement became known as La Bahia.

Father Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) noted that Fort Detroit,  New France (Michigan) is being deserted and abandoned due to poor management.  Citizens such as Pierre Tourette de la Riviere Du Chesne, Henry Campau, Louis Campau, Jacob De Marsac, (II)-Jacques Godefroy (Godfroy) de Maubeuf (1684-1730) and many others, who had previously protested against the rule of (I)-Henri de Tonty (1650-1704)- the Italian, now protest against his brother (I)-Alphonse de Tonty (Tonti) de Paludy (1650/59-1727).

Compagnie des Indies was granted a monopoly (1722-1760) on the world wide beaver trade, including the finished products.

Franciscan Isidro Felix de Espinosa (1679-1755) accompanied the Marques de San Miguel de Aguayo expedition into Texas.

Louisiana was divided into nine military districts — New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile, Alibamu, Natchitoches, Natchez, Yazoo, Arkans and the Illinois.  The Illinois Country was located north to Wisconsin, east to Vincennes, Ind., and west to the Missouri River. Settlement was concentrated on both sides of the Mississippi River from Cahokia to Kaskaskia.

January 5:  Biloxi, Louisiana, the French ship Baleine arrived with 81 young women for marriage.

June 19:  Half of Montreal, Quebec is destroyed by fire.  

July:  Don Pedro de Villazur led 40 to 200 mounted Spaniards and a large body of Comanche, out of Sante Fe, New Mexico to either attack the French Illinois or, as they claim, the Pawnee of Nebraska. 

August 16:  On the Missouri the Pawnee, aided by French Metis and Coureurs des Bois, massacred the Spanish Army.  The Metis' tactic was to just shoot the Spanish horses and the armor clad Spaniards were then easy to kill.  Only six or seven Spanish are spared.

July:   Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) ventured to Green Bay, New France (Michigan) with Jacques Testard, sieur de Montigny, and 11 Frenchmen, being escorted by St. Ange.  They visited the Village of the Malhomines, which the French call Folles Avoines (wild oats) which is a common food of the area.  The Otchagras, also called the Puans, formally dwelt on the Bay but were attacked by the Illinois who killed many of them.  They relocated to te River of the Outagamis.

Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) has an Indian woman confirm what the Dakota had previously claimed; that the Missouri River rises out of the naked mountains, very high, behind which there is a Great River that runs to the west.  At the River of the Bulls, above the River of the Illinois, which runs into the Mississippi from the west, lives the Ajouez and, three days further, the Omani who are of a fair complexion with light hair- especially the women.  It is said they are at war with the Panis further to the west.  They speak of a Great Lake very distant from them where people who look like the French, who have buttons to their clothes, build towns and use horses-which they cover with bison (buffalo) skins- for hunting the bison (buffalo), but who use only bow and arrows, live.

July:   Jacques Testard sieur de Montigny (1662-1737) is commandant at Fort La Baye (Green Bay), New France (Wisconsin) from 1721 to 1731, and Jesuit Father Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) is at the Fort.  Captain Deschaillons becomes commandant of Fort Kaministiquia, replacing Lieutenant Zacharie Robutel de La Nouve (Noue), (1665-1733).

April 21:   (II)-Charles Gauthier alias Landreville (b-1677) listed voyager West.

May 15:  A travel passport is issued for (I)-Monsieur Du Buisson and a young lady, (II)-Marie Catherine DuVerger d'Aubusson of Saint Ours, a woman of (III)-Paul Francois Raimbault (born 1696) of Saint Blin, covering one canoe with four-man crew to Post Chagouamigon (La Pointe), Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin).

May 16:   A travel permit is issued to (IV)-Pierre Paul LeGardeur (1657-1736), the Monsieur De Saint Pierre, with one canoe and (I)-Jacques Francois Thomas Poisset of Montreal, Quebec, leaving June 10 to Post Chagouamigon (La Pointe), Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin).

May 17:   Mackinac, New France (Michigan), baptism, Louis Therese Vieu son Ignace Vieu.  Louis died 1743, Fort Detroit,  New France (Michigan).

June 5:  A travel passport is issued to (II)-Jean Garreau and (II)-Henri Nicholas Catin, born February 26, 1697 Montreal, Quebec, for one canoe with the men (I)-Jean LaBoissiere of St. Ours and De Rochers for La River Saint Joseph (south Lake Michigan) to porter for Monsieur Montmidy alias Montmesnil, commander of the Post des Vivre's.  Permit to Monsieur de Repentigny, Captain for one canoe 4 men to porter for (IV)-Pierre Paul LeGardeur (1657-1736) the Monsieur de Saint Pierre, his brother, commandant to the Post Chagouamigon (La Pointe), Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin),.  LaBoissiere's family birth records suggest he is away from home for two to three years on this trip.

August:   Charles Regnault sieur Du Buisson (1664-1739) is assigned as commander of Miami Post.

October 29, 1721 Rene Trudel married (III)-Marie Anne Lienard, Metis born July 10, 1700 daughter (II)-Jean Francois Lienard (1657-1731) and Marie Madeleine Arpot (sauvagesse) also called Richard died July 16, 1758. 

In the fall:   Father Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) is at Kaskaskia (Notre Dame de la Conception) (Randolph, Illinois) among the numerous Canadian voyagers.  He would eventually reach New Orleans visiting the Acolapissas and Tious along the way.

Grand Portage (The Great Carrying Place) bypassed the rapids on the lower Pigeon River.  It took a few hours for Voyagers to carry 90 lb packs along the 8 1/2 mile portage between Lake Superior and Fort Charlotte, Indian Country; a small storage depot on the Pigeon River.

Jean Daniel Marie Viennay Pachot born 1684 son Francois Viennay and Marie Anne Gagneur reported using the Grand Portage route to the West this year.

Mission des Illinois du Chapilatas a la Pointe Coupee (Pointe Coupee, Louisiana) recorded birth, marriage and death records (1722-1723).

(III)-Pierre Reaume born October 6, 1709, Lachine, died December 19, 1766 Fort Detroit son (II)-Robert Reaume (1668-1744) and Elisabeth Brunet Belhumeur (1674-1748); 1st married 1722 Marie Therese Stebbe, Lajounesse b-1700, died May 14, 1730 Fort Detroit; 2nd married January 20, 1738 Fort Detroit.

Etienne Verniard (Veniard & Venyard) de Bourgmont  (1680-1730), a Frenchman, guided by the Missouris and Osages, traveled the Missouri River, Osage River and the Great Plains, contacting the Comanche, and did not return until 1728.  He is also reported to have visited the Grand Village of the Kansas People.

This period of time has been classified as the Hudson Bay Company "sleeping by the frozen Sea", coined by Joseph Rodson in 1749.  No attempt was made to colonization, explore or cultivate in Canada.

Lambton, Ontario.

June 5:  Permit to (III)-Maurice Blondeau (b-1706) and separate permit for (II)-Maurice Menard alias LaFontaine (born 1664), interpreter,  both for Montreal, Quebec to Missilimakinac, New France (Michigan).
(II)-Pierre Paul Marin (1692-1753) de La Malgue of Montreal joined the garrison at Fort La Point, Chagouamigon Bay, Lake Superior with one canoe June 5, 1722.  He is a Knight of the Order Military and Royal de St. Louis, Captain of the infantry and Major General of the army from the Belle Riviere.

June 13:   (V)-Jean Baptiste Rene LeGardeur (born 1695) de Repentigny departed with two canoes to deliver provisions and trade goods to (IV)-Pierre Paul LeGardeur (1657-1736), Monsieur Saint Pierre at Post Chagouamigon (La Pointe), Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin).

June 14:   Nicholas Roze departed with two canoe provisions for La Pointe, Indian Country (Wisconsin) and one canoe four men with provisions for (IV)-Pierre Paul LeGardeur (1657-1736), Saint Pierre; the commandant.  It would appear that the first two canoes are for Posts beyond La Pointe, Ojibwa Country (Wisconsin).

June 14:  A travel passport is issued to Madame D'Eschaillons for two canoes and eight men for (I)-Monsieur D'Eschaillons de St. Ours, Commandant at Post Camamistigouya alias Comanestigouia or Les Trois Rivieres (Thunder Bay).  They departed on June 16, 1722.

July:  The Abenaki Indians attacked the English at Merrymeeting Bay near the mouth of the Kennebec River in retaliation for the English strike in January at Norridgewock.

July 3:  Batiscan, birth (V)-Marie Agnes Pelletier, Metis, daughter (IV)-Antoine Pelletier, Algonquin, b-1706, and Marie Dauza Algonkine.

August:   Louis Desjardin de Rupalay (1700-1723) hired Joseph Beaujean for voyage to les pays d'en haut.

August 7:  Ste Anne de la Perade, Quebec, birth, (III)-Joseph Couturier, Metis son (II)-Denis Joseph Couturier, Metis, b-1681and  Angelique LeTellier, b-1699, died December 7, 1729 daughter (I)-Francois Letellier. 

September:  Governor Samuel Shute of Massachusetts declared war on New France, July 25 and 400 Norridgewock, Hurons of Lorette, Canadian Abenakis, and other tribes rose to the challenge and destroyed all English settlements on the lower Kennebec River.  War raids continued from eastern Maine to the Connecticut Valley.

Pierre Dartaguiette replaced St. Ange and immediately worked on suppressing the Cahokia Indians. Dartaguiette warned the governor that Fort de Chartres was in bad condition, with decaying stakes and cramped lodgings. The following year, Governor Bienville reported the concerns to French authorities and recommended a masonry fort to replace the wooden structure.
