Screencast!

It seems that everyone is doing screencasts, other than me. I do them every so often, but it takes a lot of time. I know I don’t do them as well as many of you can do. So, I’m going to give you an opportunity to do screencasts for my YouTube channel. What’s in it for you? Promotion, of course! You’ll be promoted not only on my YouTube channel, we’ll also link off to YOUR YouTube channel. We’ll also send out notifications on Twitter, Facebook, and promote you in our newsletters. That, my fellow Geeks, is one heck of a lot of promotion! We can promote your YouTube channel, your website, or your Twitter account – it’s entirely up to you!

So what do you need to do? It’s simple, really. Show me what you’ve got. Anything that can be shown on the screen can certainly be screencast. I can accommodate an unlimited amount of screencasters, but not everybody will pass muster.

  1. Record the screencast in high quality, YouTube HD dimensions. Keep the elements and motion lively. Be tasteful. Zoom in where appropriate. I’d currently prefer the videos be done without logos and/or text. No intros, no outtros. HOWEVER – I do require you to place a small textual URL bug in the lower right-hand corner of the video which says simply: lockergnome.com.
  2. Be mindful of your audio quality (keep it clear and clean). Nobody wants to hear you fumble with the mic or popping your Ps. Properly licensed Creative Commons music would be okay to play in the background (be sure to give credit where credit is due)! Please make sure that the music is not so loud as to overwhelm your voice.
  3. Introduce yourself at the very beginning of the screencast, making certain you state that you’re recording it for Lockergnome’s YouTube channel. Feel free to close the video with a tease to your own YouTube channel AND Lockergnome’s.
  4. Narrate clearly with specific directions. Why do you like the software you’re demonstrating? What’s someone to expect on the Web site you’re sharing with us? If need be, work from your own script. Don’t talk in a monotone – try to be interesting.
  5. Don’t upload the screencast to your own YouTube channel first – the idea is to promote it from mine, where more subscribers will see it and discover more of what you do. If and when your screencast is accepted, please use filemail.com for sharing it with us whenever possible. Keep your video short, sweet and to the point. No 20 minute monologues, please!
  6. Send Kat and myself an email to introduce yourself and link us to your filemail upload. We will be happy to take a look and provide you with feedback. ALWAYS CC my assistant Kat on all screencast emails, including introductions and file upload links. You can reach her at kat@lockergnome.com

Once I’ve accepted you as a regular contributor, you’ll be able to submit an unlimited amount of screencasts for Lockergnome’s channel on YouTube – about anything worth screencasting! Tips, tricks, suggestions, help, tech support, etc.

I get free stuff (software, hardware, etc.!) all the time… and I just don’t have time myself to review them all. I am looking for a few of the best screencasters in our community to help me when the time comes. You can potentially score some free things, simply by being good at reviewing.

Ideally, I would like to post one new screencast per day – created by any one of you. In order to do that, I have to get them from you, so get busy!

Chris, I think this is a great idea! It’ll motivate me to start playing with video editing software too. :)

I’d be very appreciative if I got to do this :)

I do screencasts all the time on Mac Apps at http://www.youtube.com/appsformacs if you want to see some of my content.

    Thanks

Hi Chris, just started doing some screencasts on my blog http://www.alanlife.com. This sounds like fun.

Do we have to do the review in one take or can we edit if stuff happens during the screencast?

I so want to do this, but I wouldn’t be able to do anything until I have my rig I’m planning on building this Christmas (if I can scrounge the money for it). No space on hard drive, no way to input video from an outside source, no processor right now…

Good luck with build your box. For my screencast I used Camtasia Studio, although Cam Studio is also pretty useful and free. I also have a Samson C01U USB Condenser Mic. This setup works pretty well for me.

My problem is I always fluff my lines when I try and wing it. I may start using an AutoCue system.

hey chris this is my video, hope you like if not please tell me how i can improve and i will try my best thanks for the chance of this , joe.

mmmm. Screencasts. Perfect for people wanting a promotion without showing their face. This is a brilliant idea Chris, considering that most of the community we have here is probably somewhat anti-social.

I really think it’s great how you’re finally getting the community more involved with your main channels and blog. Might even submit one myself…

I’d love to do some software reviews for you, probobally not gaming, also for the auditions do you want us to get a piece of software and review it or what? Thanks…
