The
�Baseline Survey Report: 2004� released in July, 2007 is the first
documented Report that provides bench mark data at the latest
replacement of SRS sample in 2004 for future comparison. Based on survey
in the newly selected 7,597 sample units (4,433 rural and 3,164 urban)
drawn on the 2001 census frame and spread across all States and Union
Territories, it covers information gathered for about 1.34 million
households and nearly 6.7 million population. Besides information on
population distribution, age at marriage etc. which is usually contained
in annual SRS Reports, the Baseline Report gives valuable information on
items such as, school attendance; proportion of children aged 0-4 years
staying away from one or both the parents; conditional sex-ratio by
birth order; knowledge and practice of family planning methods;
morbidity and disease pattern; personal habits � smoking, drinking and
chewing paan; and food habits � vegetarianism vs. non-vegetarianism.
Some
of the salient findings of the Baseline Report: 2004 are as under:

percent of the males and 4.1 percent of the females at the national
level have been reported as married below the legal age at marriage.

About
71 percent of the households in the country have no elderly member
(60 years & above).

Nearly
4 out of 5 children (boys & girls) in the age group 7-9 years,
at the national level, have been reported to be attending the
school.

On
an average, the difference between the age at marriage of males and
females is 4.7 years at the time of marriage
-
About
2.4 percent of the children aged 0-4 years have been reported to be
not staying with their parents.

The
Effective Reproductive span (difference between mean age at
sterilization and marriage) is reportedly 6.4 years.

About
3 percent of the country�s population has been reported to be
morbid.

3
out of 4 persons aged 15 years & above have been reported to be
non-vegetarian.
