Markets await jobs report

By CNNMoney.com staff

NEWYORK (CNNMoney.com) -- U.S. stock futures were flat early Friday, as investors braced for a key reading on the jobs situation.

Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) and Nasdaq (COMP) futures were a shade lower, while S&P 500 (SPX) edged up. Futures measure current index values against perceived future performance.

Stocks ended a listless session modestly lower Thursday as investors focused on the job market amid signs of a sluggish economic recovery.

Jobs: Investors have moved to the sidelines ahead of the Labor Department's July jobs report, due out at 8:30 a.m. ET Friday.

Economists expect 87,000 jobs were lost last month. The unemployment rate is forecast to rise to 9.6% from 9.5%.

Companies: AIG (AIG, Fortune 500) is expected to post a quarterly profit when it releases its latest financial results before the opening bell. Analysts, however, don't expect the company to offer much guidance about when it plans to pay back the government for bailing it out.

World markets: Shares in Europe headed higher in morning trading. Britain's FTSE 100, Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 were all up about 0.4%.

Asian markets ended mixed. The Shanghai Composite jumped 1.4% and the Hang Seng rose 0.6%, but Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.1%.

Currencies and commodities: The dollar rose versus the euro, the British pound and the Japanese yen.

U.S. light crude oil for September delivery fell 16 cents to $81.87 a barrel.

COMEX gold's December contract slipped $2.30 to $1,197.00 per ounce.

Bonds: Treasury prices turned higher on Friday. The 10-year note's yield fell to 2.91%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions. To top of page
