BSc Medical microbiology

Years of Entry

2010

First Year

There is a unique combination of modules derived from Medicine and Biological Sciences; Modules will introduce you to areas such as genetics, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology and of course microbiology.

Second Year

Six modules from a large number offered by Departments within the Faculty of Medicine and Biological Sciences including three compulsory Microbiology modules, one of which is dedicated to medical and disease aspects of microbiology. The choice of other modules to complement your microbial specialisation can be taken from biochemistry, genetics or physiology modules according to your interests.

Final Year

Students take a total of four modules in immunology, microbial biotechnology, virology and advanced medical microbiology. A compulsory final year project is also taken. This provides opportunities to interact with scientists in an academic or a medical laboratory - an exciting introduction to scientific research. Final year students are encouraged to become involved in departmental activities by attending discussion sessions and seminars by visiting scientists. You may also choose to become a student member of the Society for General Microbiology.
