The cool thing about podcasts is that anyone can create one using a cheap microphone and easily available software. But that's also the uncool thing about the medium, since most  sound so low-fi, and buying pro-quality recording equipment is beyond the budget of most amateur podcasters.

If you want to make your podcasts stand apart from the pack, the Technical Pro Podcaster PM-21 ($129) will provide you with equipment that will make you sound like a pro, without spending big bucks. It includes a mixer housed in a rugged metal cabinet that can be powered by an AC/DC adapter or a 9-volt battery for field recordings, a pro-grade microphone and headphones, and a user guide and software. A PM-22 package ($189) with two mikes and an additional set of headphones is also available.

The Podcaster mixer features a pair of gold-plated 1/4-inch microphone inputs, a 3.5-mm stereo input for an iPod or MP3 player and stereo line-level inputs for an additional audio source such as a CD player. It also has six discrete channels with level adjust and bass/treble equalization, analog stereo outputs and a USB audio output.

The mike that comes with the Podcaster has a die-cast body, an on/off switch and a 10-foot cable along with a heavy-weight desktop mike stand. The supplied headphones also come with a 10-foot cord and offer excellent noise isolation, comfort and sound quality. The software and step-by-step tutorial was developed by Podbean, and the Podcaster also comes with a CD-ROM of Audacity's audio editor for PCs and Macs.

Technical Pro's Podcaster could make the difference between listeners taking your podcasts seriously and subscribing to them or passing them by for lack of professional quality.
