Los Diaguitas: Alimentación y vivienda
• Aunque el maíz era la base de su alimentación, también los porotos y el zapallo formaban parte de su dieta. • Los diaguitas habitaban dos tipos de aldeas según fuera tiempo de paz o de guerra. En tiempo de paz las aldeas estaban formadas por viviendas fabricadas con material ligero de origen vegetal. En un caso, se especifica que las casas se concentraban en un espacio reducido, "estaban muy espesas", señala un cronista. Entre las casas de estos pueblos se destacaba la "ramada o casa grande" del jefe, probablemente vinculada a sus necesidades ceremoniales o a sus hábitos poligénicos. Otra estructura que se debió destacar en la aldea o en su proximidad era la casa o especie de santuario del chaman o sacerdote del valle. En tiempos de guerra, los diaguitas habitaban aldeas fortificadas o pukara, ubicados en sitios elevados, de difícil acceso, fáciles de defender y apropiados para arrojar proyectiles desde lo alto a los atacantes. Eran construidos con murallas de piedras y en algunos casos se describen entradas de madera y estacadas o palenques.
