Amana Icemaker Troubleshooting

According to Amana, technology should make your life simpler, not more complicated.
Amana ice makers let you fill your tall glasses with filtered ice and water simultaneously, so you can make a quick trip to the kitchen without missing any of your favorite programs.

Amana ice makers can develop problems, and it can be beneficial to your wallet to know some troubleshooting techniques without calling the repairman. If the technology is not familiar to you, call a professional for help.

    Safety

  1. Before troubleshooting any electrical appliance, unplug the appliance or turn off the power at the breaker box. Test the circuit to make sure that the power is off. Hazardous electrical charges can be stored in a device, even though the power is disconnected, so always discharge these devices before you begin troubleshooting. If you don't know how a device works, consult a professional.

Rubber-soled shoes should be worn when working with electrical equipment, and tools should be grasped by their insulated handles. Conductive surfaces such as pipes and metal bracing should not be touched.

Follow manufacturer's instructions when troubleshooting your appliance.
  2. Not Making Ice

  3. To verify that the Amana ice maker is turned on, check the shutoff arm at the top of the ice bin. If the Amana ice maker has shut off, the wire along the right side of the ice maker will be in a raised position. Lower the wire, and try to fill your glass with ice cubes.
If there is no water in the ice cube tray, check the water supply line; to verify that you're getting adequate water pressure to the solenoid valve, which controls the flow of water. Unrestricted flow of at least one fourth inch at the water supply valve is sufficient.
Sometimes the water inlet tube is frozen over with ice, and water can't pass into the Amana ice maker. Use a hair dryer to thaw out the ice cube tray, taking special care not to overheat the plastics, as they can crack. Increase the setting on the freezer slightly, making sure that no water is dripping from the inlet tube, as it will freeze again. If the water continues to drip, replacement of the water control valve may be needed.
  4. Not Making Ice (Water in Tray)

  5. Your freezer temperature needs to be turned down. Inspect freezer food to make sure it's in a frozen state. Freezer temperature should be 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.
If the sides of the Amana ice maker are warm, the unit is stuck in heat for release mode. Call a qualified appliance repair specialist to replace the control module.
  6. Doesn't Release Ice Cubes

  7. Older plastic ice cube trays can build up with minerals from the water supply, become sticky, and ice cubes fail to drop. Remove the ice cubes stuck in the ice cube tray, spray the tray with cooking spray or grease with margarine, and let it run a cycle. Wait a few hours, and try releasing the ice cubes from the tray. If the ice cubes release, it's time to buy a new ice cube tray.

If the ice cubes don't release, the ice maker module may not be advancing properly.
  8. Ice Maker Odors

  9. Ice cube bins can absorb odors from freezer food, so store food in lidded plastic containers.Baking soda is temporarily effective, but if odors become too strong, replacing the ice cube bin may be the best solution.
