Top 5 Twitterers of Each Country in the World Based on Number of Followers

By Xavier Lur on April 5 | View commentsComments

twitterYou probably have stumbled across the list of the “Top 3 Twitterers of Each Country in the World Based on Number of Followers” which has attracted thousands of readers at my previous blog few months ago. Today, I’d like to share with you guys a newly-updated list of the “Top 5 Twitterers of Each Country in the World Based on Number of Followers”. Hope you can share this wonderful list on Twitter, Digg or StumbleUpon!

Using information from Twitterholic, a service which tracks and ranks the Top 1000 twitterers based on the number of followers, I’ve compiled my own list of “Top 5 Twitterers of Each Country based on Number of Followers”.

Is this list exactly the same as Twitterholic?

Well, the answer is no! When you search the top followers based on a location for example UK on Twitterholic, what you see isn’t really correct. It’s because some people didn’t type in the word “UK” under the “location” section in their profiles, and they enter “London” instead. Hence, the system isn’t smart enough to detect that actually London is part of UK. So what I’ve done is that I’ve manually search for the top 5 twitterers in UK and included them in this list.

Before you proceed, do note these following points:

- all these numbers below aren’t live which means that it will change over time, so the ranking will be different

- there are 192 countries in the world according to the United Nations, but I’ll only include 53 countries as it seems that there are only a few Twitterers from Zimbabwe, Niger, Togo, etc.

- not all Twitter users shows where they’re from, hence the rankings might be incorrect

  • Alistair Burns
Please note we came up with the United Kingdom concept several years ago (1707) whereas you have a separate listing for Scotland!
  • @calentita
Thanks that was really interesting, can't believe Coldplay beat Stephenfry though!
Could list Wales if you're going to list Scotland
But most of all - where are all the African countries???:(

    Thanks again

    @calentita
  • Hilarious! Italy's top twitterer is.... @Chewbacca :)
  • ge
The Caribbean islands missing on your list
  • Thanks for your impressive list of the 5 twitterers with most followers in every country. In The Neherlands, however, I miss Maxime Verhagen, our foreign minister: http://twitter.com/MaximeVerhagen. He is a very active twitterer, who also tells where he is: http://www.hierisministerverhagen.nl/. Just today he reported he passed the 10,000 followers. He seems me to be a good number 2 of The Netherlands.
I made a link to your list at my Twitter page http://members.chello.nl/a.horlings/doc-twit.html.

    Thanks again,

    Andreas K. Horlings

  • A huge list. You do a lot of work. Nicely done.
  • What a great list! So fun to see the top twitter peeps by country! We were thrilled to see @soultravelers3 in the top 5 for Spain!

We just won 2 Lonely Planet Travel Awards including Best Microblog ( Twitter) so this goes along nicely with that! ;)

We are on an open ended world tour as a family and we have grown very fond of Spain which is our home away from home where we winter and rest between our 7 months of straight travel a year.
  • How do you make this list? I want to collect Europe countries and twitterers :)
  • SvB
Thank You for putting my name on the Indonesian list.
    Great work !
  • Patrick Looram
Nice work. I was also surprised Twitterholic isn't able to group London with the UK. Can you figure out how many total twitter accounts there are in SE asian Countries?
  • Hey, Xavier. You forgot about the Malaysian @emailcopywriter, who has over 16,000 followers!

Oh well. I will be out of the list. That's ok though :)
  • I was happy to see Lonnie Hodge at the top of the China list, I listened to him speak at a Shanghai NextStep meeting.
  • Xavier Lur
@Andreas & @Gloson Thanks for the update! I've already included both of them in this list.
  • Jo-Ann Lynette Kruger
Thanks very much for the list most informative. I'll spred the list.
  • Xavier I think there are so many countries in the world but only this much countries uses twitter?
  • AD7863
Oh very nice. Some day I hope to be somewhere there for United Kingdom :)
  • He Xin
    That's a wonderful list, however...
How can Taiwan be a country? I think it should be removed from this list.
  • Great list! Thanks for the information. Some of the people that I am following are on your list and I didn't realize some of them weren't in the US. Xavier I didn't realize you were in Singapore. Big hello, from Biloxi, MS (USA)! BTW congrats on all the followers. You are one busy young man :)
  • What about Cambodia!! We're sad not to be on the list.
  • Xavier, this is fantastic, I so appreciate all the work that went into it. I am also very impressed with the blog. I find the list very useful in several ways, number one being to tweet on to others. One question - why is Amber Mac listed twice under Canada?
  • Oli
Hey - nice list. As you said, these numbers are always changing - just pointing out @djodcouk in Shanghai, China @ 3,852 Followers...

    Keep up the good work!
  • iquanyin
this was so cool! i chose one person from each country to follow. i keep your blog in my igoogle--always something i want to read. thanks.
  • Good informations, keep up the good work.
  • Hey WTF ? You didnt include me in the list of the top 5 from pakistan .. I have over 1900 followers.. Check out my profile.. http://twitter.com/nabeehak .. I am actually number 1 from Pakistan..

I'll be glad if u add me to the list..
  • Mary
What's the source of this list? http://twitterscore.net/high-scores-by-location ?
  • Er, you missed me apparently. I'm from Norway, and I've beaten out Opera for the Number Two slot ;)
  • The #1 from Spain is not really in Spain. Curious to find out who will fill the #5 spot.
  • Not to sure you can classify a "top twitterer" purely on the number of followers. There are so many tricks to ramp up the number of people following one account that I believe people are wiseing up to all this hype.

It should always be quality over quantity.
  • fjfonseca
This is list is tottaly flawed in my opinion.
    Why?
All I have to do is to change my location to, let's say Saudi Arabia and immediately I would show as number one on that list for that country.

Also, this list gives credit to number of followers and that is something totally over rated.
You have great people in that list (@adbert from Argentina is a friend of mine and a great person) but you also have accounts that interact with regular users.

Twitter should be about quality of relationships and not about the number of followers.

In my humble opinion this post is a major #fail.

    Sorry guys!
