UPDATED: 11:57 am CDT April 6, 2009

A police officer was hurt during a traffic stop in west Houston on Monday, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Houston police said officers stopped a vehicle in the 1100 block of Lumpkin Road near the Katy Freeway at about 11 a.m.

The driver took off during the stop and ran over a police officer, investigators said. The extent of his injuries has not been released.

Detectives said the officer fired several shots at the vehicle, striking its windshield.

The driver and others inside the vehicle abandoned the vehicle a short distance away and took off on foot. Police said at least one of the fleeing persons appeared to have been shot.

Two people have been taken into custody, investigators said.
