1. National Museum of Naval Aviation
National Naval Aviation Museum, Pensacola, Florida
Huge, FREE museum on Naval Air Station Pensacola, featuring planes from the dawn of flight to today's jet fighters. Great souvenir shop! IMAX theatre and flight simulator require admission payment (and latter is a waste of money!). If you go on a Sunday, you can first climb the historic lighthouse, also on the base, right near the museum. (Lighthouse is closed to climbers the rest of the week.) Also nearby is Fort Barrancas, a historic coastal fortification that is also free to explore.
2. Historic Pensacola Village
Historic Pensacola Village, Pensacola, Florida
Collection of fascinating vintage buildings clustered around historic Seville Square district. Cheap walking tours, interesting museums of commerce and industry included in price.
3. Dharma Blue
Dharma Blue, Pensacola, Florida
Located in a neat old house right on Seville Square, great nouveau cuisine (i.e. trimming stuff sprinkled around the dge of your plate), awesome hommade potato chips, killer desserts, great lunch and dinner menus. Lots of local artwork on the walls, including some unusual tributes to pop stars.
4. Pensacola Little Theatre
Pensacola Little Theatre, Pensacola, Florida
One of the nation's oldest community theatre companies. Produce consistently excellent shows, including musicals, dramas and comedies. Great luncheon restaurant in the lobby. Right off Plaza Ferdinand near Historic Pensacola Village.
5. T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum
T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum, Pensacola, Florida
One of those great small-city eclectic museums. Everything from Spanish and French colonial artifacts to T.T. Wentworth's office equipment. (He loved collecting stuff and it's all here in the former City Hall.)
6. Mesquite Charlie's
Mesquite Charlie's, Pensacola, Florida
Some of the world's most stupendous steaks in a Wild West atmosphere. Servers have names like Annie Oakley, Wild Bill, etc. The new salad bar is tremendous, but I never get it cuz the steaks are so huge. "The 76er" is the masterpiece: 76 ounces of prime cow. Eat it all in under an hour (some folks have) and it's free. I settle for the succulent prime rib myself.
7. Fish House
Fish House & Atlas, Pensacola, Florida
Great seafood, not outrageously priced considering its prime, marine-side location across Bayfront Pkwy. from Seville Square. Sit outside, even in summer, and enjoy the views of the bay and Old Town.
8. Downtown Pensacola
All the convenience and charm of a historic small city, with great art galleries, eclectic shops, stately churches, superb restaurants and fascinating museums, all very strollable and convenient.
