    The Sideshow

93-year-old Florida woman retires her ’64 Mercury after 576,000 miles on the road

(Photo Credit: Rachel Veitch)These days, most people consider themselves lucky if a new car lasts 5 to 10 years. Make it to 100,000 miles in your vehicle, and the car company might make a commercial about you. That makes 93-year-old Rachel Veitch a notable exception. Veitch is retiring her 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente after more than 576,000 miles on the road.

"I am legally blind, so I can no longer drive my lovely Chariot," Veitch told FoxNews.com. "They don't have to take it away, I would not dream of driving that car again." The car itself is fine, but Veitch has macular degeneration in both her eyes, making her legally blind. After running a red light in March, she decided to voluntarily give up the vehicle she's been driving since Lyndon Johnson occupied the White House.

"I have taken it in stride," she said. "I don't have cancer, I don't have Lou Gehrig's disease. I am lucky."

Yet for all the miles she has put on her vehicle, it doesn't come close to the world record. The Truth About Cars blog wrote that Irv Gordon's 1966 Volvo P1800 is scheduled to reach 3 million miles this year. Gordon has held the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for most miles on a noncommercial vehicle since 1998.

Even without the world record, Vietch is fond of noting that the car has outlasted three marriages. Mechanically, it's worn through three sets of shocks, 18 batteries and eight mufflers. Veitch bought the car in February 1964 for just $3,289.

She credits the longevity to a "near-obsessive" approach to the car's maintenance. "I've never been a destructive person and I've just taken care of everything, except my husbands," she told FoxNews.

Veitch, who appeared with the vehicle on an August 2010 episode of the "Tonight Show," said she would be happy to sell the vehicle to host Jay Leno, a known car afficionado. She's not sure if Leno would be interested, but her four children, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, aren't in line.

"It wouldn't matter if they did, they're not going to get it. They couldn't take care of it like I did," she told FoxNews.

I am with Rachel! I drive over 30 miles every day to work in a 1979 VW Transporter(Bus) I keep it well maintained, and it does me right! Not only that, but my two project cars(no thyre not running as of yet) are built like a tank! I have a 49 Chrysler Windsor and a 58 Chevy Delray, and working on these old cars is so simple! Not only that, but I bought a rebuild kit for the original flathead straight 6 in my chrysler for $350... Tell me how much you can rebuild a newer vehicle for... Not to mention the hassle that would be involved in removing all of the electronic accessories, and other unnecessary parts just so you could get to the engine to rebuild it!!!

What an absurd statement! I know MANY people driving cars daily with well over 100,000 miles. I recently donated a 1988 Saab 9000 Turbo to charity that had 283,000 miles on it. Needed a new A/C compressor but it ran fine (still had original turbo) and did not burn oil. I currently drive a 2004 Subaru with 189,000 miles on it and my wife drives a 2000 Isuzu with 134,000 miles...both run great.

Make a commercial for 100,000 miles? Isn't that pretty common?

Mr. Pfeiffer is obviously out of touch. It is not uncommon at all for an automobile to surpass 100,000 miles. While I enjoyed the point of the story being about this 93 year old lady, I cannot fathom celebrating a car driven an average of 12000 miles a year.

I have a car right now with over 250,000 miles . I would like to buy this car. I have bought 3 cars in my life of 52 years and I have only bought them from the elderly. If this car is for sale I would like to buy it . 386-631-4392 Thanks, Richard

You have to remember that it was a big deal years ago. Many cars rusted out a lot quicker and the lubricants available were not nearly as good as they are now. It was a big thing to be in a car while it turned "a hundred grand" on the odometer. I was in a few that the driver actually pulled over when it hit "all nines" and then all zero's and took pictures of the odometer. Like others have said, today's disposable world is vastly different than yesterdays, but at the rate we're going, we will return to those days again out of necessity.

How nice it would be if the people who wrote these car stories knew something about cars. I have yet to see one. Check craigslist Eric and you will be hard pressed to find a car that DOESN'T have at least 100,000 miles you fool.

this really isnt a big deal.. my 1999 Jeep Cherokee has 333,350 miles on it and its completely original, I am just now rebuilding the motor just as preventative maintenance...do I get a news article for packing that many miles into a 13 year period?

My ex girlfriends Dad has a 85 Toyota pickup (Not Diesel) with 550k miles on it, and I myself owned a 91 corolla with 300k on it. My Sister also owns a 90 4Runner with an odometer that broke at 220k. Moral of the story... If you take care of your car, it will take car of you.
