Los Diaguitas: El pueblo diaguita
• También llamados “calchiquies”, cultivaron el maiz con el sistema de terrazas, obtenian lana de las llamas, el guanaco y la vicuña. Trabajaron el oro, plata y cobre.
• La Cultura Diaguita, agrícola y alfarera, existió entre el siglo VIII y XV d. C, y fue contemporánea a la cultura atacameña. Esta etnia posiblemente emparentada con los diaguitas argentinos, habría cruzado la cordillera para asentarse en los fértiles valles del Norte Chico entre los ríos Copiapó, Huasco, Elqui, Limarí y Choapa, entre los siglos V y VI. Al asentarse en esta área habría reemplazado a la antigua cultura de El Molle, que se extendía desde el valle del Huasco por el norte, hasta el Choapa por el sur. Los Diaguitas son reconocidos por su arte cerámico, que se caracteriza por su fina factura y rica decoración con figuras geométricas: líneas rectas, zig-zag y triángulos adosados a una línea. Sus colores son generalmente el blanco, rojo y negro. A grandes rasgos, su alfareria se puede dividir en dos tipos de tiestos, unos destinados al uso cotidiano, los jarros zapato, y otros utilizados para fines ceremoniales y rituales, los jarros pato, más finos y de mayor elaboración
