How to Embed Flash Into Open Office Impress

OpenOffice is a suite of freeware applications offered by Sun Microsystems as an alternative to pricey commercial products such as Microsoft Office. Impress is the OpenOffice presentation software. Aside from the usual presentation features, such as the ability to add images, text and sound, users of OpenOffice also can place Flash animation files directly inside an Impress presentation. The process for doing this is simple and quick. However, you have to install a plug-in first.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the OpenOffice site and download the Flash plug-in. The file is named "NPSWF32.dll"

    • 2

Right-click on the plug-in file and choose "Copy." Now go inside the folders of your OpenOffice application and open the "Basis" folder. Open the "program" and then the "plugin" folders.

    • 3

Right-click inside the "plugin" folder and choose "Paste." Close all OpenOffice applications you have open.

    • 4

Open Impress. Select "File" and select "Open." In the dialog that appears, locate a file you want to add a flash animation to and open it.

    • 5

Select "Insert" from the menu and choose "Object." From the options choose "Plugin." Choose to insert a ".swf" file, locate the one you want and open it. It will appear in the presentation.
