McClain, Chekwa, Johnson, Cartwright not practicing

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, October 20th, 2011 at 10:54 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are relatively healthy for it being six games into the season. Even so, they still are without a handful of players as they near their game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Middle linebacker Rolando McClain (ankle), fullback Marcel Reece (ankle), cornerbacks Chris Johnson (hamstring) and Chimdi Chekwa (hamstring) and running back Rock Cartwright (knee) aren’t practicing today.
Chekwa and Reece are working with trainers on an adjacent field, going through agility drills and testing out their injured parts. At this point, it’s a stretch to envision either of them playing Sunday.
Given the Raiders have a bye after the Chiefs game, it makes perfect sense to give them two more weeks to recover and get back into football shape and then turn them loose for the final nine games.

Quarterback Carson Palmer was spotted throwing sideline passes to tight end Kevin Boss in the first portion of practice, as offensive coordinator Al Saunders looked on and dished out pointers.
Suffice, Palmer’s arm strength is just fine. His passes arrive in a hurry, in a tight spiral. So, cross off arm strength from your list of possible concerns.

The Raiders have not announced whether Sunday’s game is sold out. The deadline is 1:05 p.m. today. The Raiders have sold out all three of their regular-season home games this season.

The Raiders are in the midst of an eight-game winning streak against AFC West opponents. That is the longest such active streak of any team in the league.
Coincidentally, the Chiefs were the last AFC West team to beat the Raiders, and it came in Oakland on Nov. 15, 2009.

Either Mark wouldn’t allow that or there was some stipulation written up by Al before he passed that stated not to touch him.

    …………..

Pfft. Stipulation. They should fire him. I doubt that could even hold up in court. As chaotic as the courts are today? What judge is going to hear a case about some kind of stipulation where someone keeps his job? I guarantee you he’d rule that they just pay Herrera his salary he was entitled to, and that’s it. And that would be fine. From there he’s out. That guy is an ass. He’s one of those remnants of everything that was bad with Al. Al did a lot of good things, dragging this Herrera goon around with him wasn’t one of them.

I don’t know about all the what ifs but what I do know is Gruden made this team relevant during his time as coach. The players loved the guy, the fans loved the guy and when he was coaching I “””expected””” Our team to win. That is relevant enough for me. The reason we ran the ball so much is because we had a heck of a running game with Charlie Garnner (Wolverine)Crocket, Weatley, Zach and the blocking up front. Plus, we had Tim Brown who was money on converting a third down. RIch Gannon could pick a defnese a part chunk by chunk so there was no flinging the ball 40 yards down field unless someone got way open, usually it was Porter.

Not to mention we had a defense that you could depend on to make big time stops under Chucky.

The team won for a while under Callahan but they eventually hated the guys guts.

    Loved Chucky on Sunday’s!

Rob, I thought Herrera’s conduct with Kawakami was classless. We were in the midst of a horrible 7 year funk, already having enough problems getting free agents and coaches to come here, and he embarrasses the organization like that. Herrera is outright scum.

You take you best look at it and come to whatever conclusion you want. Raiders lovers will hate me more–I’d be disappointed if the Black Hole took my side. The more semi-sane sports fans might come to a different understanding.

I feel bad for Raiders employees. I really do. I understand the unique pressures and paranoia involved when you work for Al Davis. I talk to enough people who used to work for him to know.

I have a feeling at some point John Herrera and I will sit back and laugh about this. Maybe not for a while, but we probably will. I think he’s normally a very nice man.

It’s fairly entertaining when you can step back and see it from far away. It’s illustrative and it’s a little sad, again, in an always entertaining way. This is what the once-great franchise is reduced to?
But when it’s running up to you and screaming in your face and calling you a liar and apparently intimating that I was dabbling in counter-culture activities with a national NFL writer? HUH? In front of every local TV station, to be shown at 6 and 11 I would guess? Well, now!

(With Lane Kiffin beaming like a Cheshire Cat as he walked past us, by the way. Beaming like the happiest man on earth. Glad to give you a giggle, LK. I’m SURE Kiffin and I will have a laugh about this one… fairly soon. Oh by the way: He’s not fired yet, but it’s still pending.)

Oh man, that’s really really interesting to walk into the heart of the Raiders. That’s what happened to me just a little while ago and it was like dropping into Wonderland for few minutes–I could see what the Raiders see, I could feel what the Raiders feel, I was really tapped into the mania.

Man, it was trippy. Head-spinning. Hallucinatory.

Herrera brought me there by angrily confronting me about a question I asked Kiffin. I feel bad for the guy (well for BOTH guys), but Herrera’s the one who closed Kiffin’s Monday news conference by stepping up to me, shouting at me, calling me a liar.

I didn’t get mad. You’ll see the video. I wasn’t mad. I was interested: THIS IS WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE
    INSIDE THE RAIDER MANIA.

It was crazy. It was other-worldly, where normal truths didn’t mean anything. Yep, I feel like I know the Raiders soooo well now.

Here was my question to Kiffin: Given that there are reports (that Kiffin earlier didn’t deny) that Raiders officials have told him he’s going to be fired, given that we all know a Raiders official distribued printed copies of an espn.com article critical of Kiffin, given that Kiffin came to today’s news conference without a single item of Raiders garb…

… How isolated does Kiffin feel in this organization?

(I know, a long question. But Kiffin was there with me on it. He understood.)

Here was Herrera’s point: NO Raider official ever distributed such a negative article.

OK, since John is making a point of this, I can say that I know that it was Herrera who handed it out. I didn’t write his name at the time–because, again, I feel for Raiders employees and the grunt work they have to do for Al’s paranoia–but I will now.

If John’s going to scream in front of five TV cameras about it, I guess he’s volunteering himself right there.

I’m not the only one who knows what John did. By far not the only one. Oh well, in Wonderland, I guess John can alter reality. Fine. Wonderland is weird.

Here’s a bit of what John said–I wasn’t taking notes, but my reporter friends were taping it, since it was practically part of the Kiffin news confference, so here’s a partial transcript:

“You built a whole column on a lie!” Herrera said. “So did Lowell Cohn! So did your [REFERENCE DELETED BY ME BY REQUEST OF A FORMER BOSS OF MINE] Mike Silver.”

Yikes! Silver is a respected journalist and I don’t know what he does in private, but geez, John Herrera, Silver’s not exactly one of my confidantes. (It’s vice-versa, of course.)

Cohn, I can’t vouch for. (I kid, I kid! I respect nobody in this market more than Lowell, which you already know.)

I said: A lot of people in this room know the truth about the negative story, John.

    I said: You’re embarrassing yourself.

“I’m not embarrassing myself,” Herrera said, “I’m embarrassed that you don’t know how to write a column…. Nothing was distributed in this room. Nothing. You are a liar.”

I’m not a liar. Raiders fans might think so, I don’t know. In Al Davis Wonderland, maybe, I’m a liar. But on this point, I will go to the mat.

OK, now I’ve got to write a story on Kiffin, though I’m out of Wonderland and it feels weird.

    exactly right-

    Mr. Bush needs 25-30 carries to be effective most big backs do;

I expect the Raiders to run at least 60-70% against Kansas City no matter who starts.

We’ve had 190 rushes in 6 games, averaging 31 a geme with the most carries vs Clev (40) & Den (39).

[187 pass plays (7 sacks included)]

    thats a near 50% balance

  140. Kirk Says:

For those who think Palmer struggled last season, here’s an interesting stat: Only eight other quarterbacks threw more than the 26 touchdown passes he had.

Palmer had some tough moments, but looking at his second-to-last game with the Bengals, a blowout of the Chargers, shows how good he can be. Playing that day without Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens, who drove him crazy last season, Palmer played free and loose.

He threw four touchdown passes and had a passer rating of 157.2. He had five pass plays over 20 yards, one a 59-yard touchdown and another a 44-yard completion. He was comfortable and he was sharp. He looked like he enjoyed himself.

The ability is still there. Now that he is with a team with young, impressionable receivers — not unlike the ones he threw to in that game for the Bengals — Palmer should be able to make plays down the field for the Raiders.

    ———-

Actually, I disagree. He’s a bit of a jack of all trades. Think Mike Taylor is the media guy. Herrera was Al’s right hand man. How much power he had to make independent decisions is unknown and probably debatable, but Herrera is kind of a mysterious figure for the organization.

Tim Kawakami is a stone cold Raider Hater. Lets just get that straight and out of the way. I hate the way he comes on during the game chats and bring up the Niners just to piss us off. The guy is a total tool.

That said, I will get to Sullivans question:

Herrera was trained by Al, to be well versed in the entire organization. From head to toe. But namely on the football-business side of things.

While it is Amy Trask who handles the business-business stuff, and now Hue who handles the football-football stuff, there needed to be someone left behind that understood the salary cap and the way Al wanted the football administrative side of things ran. And that was entrusted to Herrera.

None of you may think he is credible, capable, or deserving of this position….but that isnt the topic.

You asked what he does. I just told you.

    Mark – Final say so
    Madden – Consultant to Mark
    Trask – Business
    Herrera – Salary Cap/Personel/Staffing/Scouting
Hue – All football related stuff

Whomever our GM ends up being, Herrera will be their right hand man. Herrera is a jack of all trades and seemingly an asset to the entire administration. Or at least that is what he was intended to be. How well he does this would require any one of us to be on the inside to see it for ourselves.

  170. RaiderRockstar Says:

Rosenthal’s take: I’d pick the Raiders even if Kyle Boller were starting. Heck, I’d pick the Raiders even if Florio’s buddy Brett Favre were starting. Oakland is built on aggressive line play on both sides of the ball, not their quarterbacks. Kansas City’s season has been built on beating two bad teams.

    Rosenthal’s pick: Raiders 26, Chiefs 20.

Herrera is a Raider for life. GET OVER IT! The guy is as big a Raider fan and loyal follower of AL as the rest of us. He was hired at the age of 16 by AL to be his driver. AL put Herrera through college and has kept him a part of the organization all these years. I’m positive he has to know the business after being ALs right hand man all these years. Look at what Hue picked up from AL in a year and a half. I can only imagine what Herrera knows goes on behind those walls

    La Malicia Negra said,
“Wow, here is some numbers to the worshipers of the republican media pundits..

Denmark is the top5 country in the world to make business. In the Top15, FIVE nordic countries are represented… Not bad for the such socalled socia1ist…”

1.) Lay off the idiotic attempt to convert anyone on this blog to your political position. You have just shown your pinheadedness by attempting to compare apples to oranges or better yet, veggies to meat. Denmark is about the size of Wisconsin, compared to this country’s 310+ million and it has the diversity of a place akin to Alberta. This lack of diversity allows the evolutionarily fit practice of taking care of those like one’s self (the extended family, the same ethnic tribe, those with common genetic roots, those with a shared language and culture, in other words, those who are the “same,” those who share common beliefs and values)to be used to help out others, a practice that breaks down and is not supported by the masses when their roots are not shared and when there is too much variety in genetic, cultural, ethnic, and language backgrounds.

    2) Denmark bothers to develop and export energy, something you pinheads won’t allow us to do, an economic practice which contributes to its economic base.

Further, it allows employers to fire people who can’t do the job, which is why unemployment compensation is common. Unions exist but aren’t powerful–in fact are disappearing. Can’t do the job? Bye, bye. However, because most Danes, like most Northern Euros have an IQ above average, they can be retrained, unlike many of our own citizens and many of our non-citiznes whose IQs are 1.5 to two standard deviations below the norm and who continue to have babies at a higher rater than those with average and above average intelligence. (Yes, it IS about intelligence, BABY!)

It always amazes me that there are some on a football blog who whine and complain when their team sucks. They want the coach and his staff fired; they want this player or that sent packing when he doesn’t do the job; they want the owner to sell if he can’t or won’t spend the money to get a good team. You know what? That’s the way it ought to be. If a coach can’t do the trick, get rid of him. If a player can’t, do the same. If an owner sucks, boycott him and don’t give him your money. It’s about competition; it’s about competition leading to excellence and about mediocrity and flat-out incompetence. It’s about creating a culture in which people understand that unless they produce, they will be sent packing.

Yet the same people on this blog who understand competition and the free market in football and how it leads to excellence (yes, Belichek applies those priniples to his team, and Hue is attempting to do it here–produce or be replaced by someone who can do the job) are the same pinheads like you who don’t understand it on a larger scale.

You want to compare Denmark to a nation our size with all the differences between the two? That’s like comparing t-ball to major league baseball or like comparing football as played by 7 years old to football as practice as a business by the NFL.

Go read some history and some macro-economics. Go read some history. And for God’s sake, let that be your last damn political commentary, you idiot.

Rosenhaus said Owens could play Sunday.

“We are open to any team at this point,” Rosenhaus said Wednesday. “There have been several teams showing interest thus far, but I won’t identify them at this time.”

The 37-year-old Owens played 14 games for Cincinnati last year, making 72 receptions with nine touchdowns. He ranks third in career touchdown catches with 153 and second in yards receiving with 15,934.

Owens also played for San Francisco, Philadelphia, Dallas and Buffalo.

Among those teams short-handed at receiver are Denver, Kansas City, San Diego and New England.

Anytime I read a “Method To My Madness” comment, it makes me throw up in my own mouth. Seriously, he is like that kid in class that nobody liked so he would just yell out controversial things to get attention. Reading his homie-g slang, grammatical error ridden, unintelligible posts is enough to make me stop looking over the comments all together. Albeit, there is great insight from most of you, its hard to ignore his nonsense.

Mario Williams Injury: Texans LB Out For Entire 2011 Season, According To Report

The Houston Texans are shutting down Mario Williams for the season, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports. It was reported on Monday morning that Williams suffered a torn pectoral muscle and his 2011 season was in jeopardy. It appears his season will end.

Williams suffered the injury sacking Jason Campbell in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders. He left the game and never returned.

Williams’ loss is a significant one for Houston, who has been dealing with injuries to star players like Arian Foster and Andre Johnson this season. He was the team’s leading pass rusher with five sacks and looked solid in his transition to outside linebacker from defensive end.
