What problems do we face with ethics?

Scott on November 12, 2009 in Where do we start with ethics?

My concern for ethics to date has been with the setting of unrealistic goals which, up until recently, have been classified as the fundamentals of ethical theory. I am currently taking a class on particularism (morality without principles, click the link for a quick summary) and am happy to find out there are others who think the subject of ethics is fundementally flawed. While I have yet to be convinced that the extreme, being NO moral principles, is true, I believe that we have over steped our bounds in philosophy as to what can be concretely defined.

A minimalistic approach to principles, with a focus on practical application of those principles in subjective circumstances I believe to be more appropriate. I do believe that, even without bringing God into the argument, we are able to construct objective principles which will fit with our ever changing social dynamics. My goal for ethics is to bring to light these ‘flexible’, objective principles. I will post a link to a my essay on the subject shortly (still in the midst of writing).
