Fixed-Income Seniors Targeted by Land-Based Casinos

By Paul Black on October 8, 2008  Email it!    Print Version

Play Slots at Rushmore Casino! SAN JOSE, CA -- With a world-wide economic crisis looming over the gaming industry, casino marketers are targeting senior citizens on fixed-income budgets more than ever. The industry is taking advantage of their most reliable customers, the poor and lonely elderly of the United States.

Most casinos across the US actively market to seniors offering free transportation, meals, and other incentives to visit their casino and gamble.  The end result - seniors arrive home at the end of the day broke and discouraged, unable to pay for food, medicine, and their rent.

Most seniors afford the gambling excursions by tapping into their Social Security checks, usually only $900-$1200 per month.  Casinos have found seniors on fixed-incomes to be a reliable income-base for the slot machines, especially.

"If you walk-into a casino during the day, its usually filled with senior citizens punching the play button on progressive slots", says Beth Ayala, a community organizer from San Jose, California.

"The casinos have been tremendously successful marketing to single people, over 65 years-old", she added.

With the industry in crisis, and casino stocks falling to 10-year lows, its a matter of survival for both the gaming industry and our seniors.
