Early Reaction To McCain's V.P. Pick

How good of a pick is Sarah Palin for the GOP vice presidential slot?

It could be brilliant, says CBS News political consultant Joe Trippi.

"What they're going to do is they're going to use her to take on Obama and challenge him to take on the corruption in his own party," says Trippi, who notes that Palin has earned a reputation for fighting Republican corruption in Alaska. "They've got these two mavericks now. They can say, 'he talks about changing politics, but he's never taken on the corruption in the Democratic Party like we have in our party. We'll take it on."

"It goes to the instinct everybody has to hate Washington," he adds. "This is potentially a real winner because of the way it appeals to women but also how they can rail against Washington."

The appeal of picking a woman has risks, however, "if it seems an affirmative-action pick," says CBS News senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield.

If people believe the only reason Palin, a first term governor with little experience, was picked is that she's a woman, "that might not sit well with working class guys," he says.

CBS News political analyst Dan Bartlett points out that the Palin pick signals that the McCain camp sees an opportunity to make headway with Hillary Clinton supporters who have not come over to Obama. "The problem she has is a lot of those women who rallied around Hillary Clinton are pro-choice, and she's pro-life," Trippi notes. "To defect, they'd be voting for a pro-life ticket."

And then there is the question of whether Palin is ready to be president – a charge that Republicans have repeatedly lobbied at Obama. (McCain, as Democrats are sure to point out, turns 72 today.)

"The argument is Obama is not ready for 3 am phone call about crises in central Europe or one of the -stans, so what about Palin?," says Greenfield. "There's no reason to think there's anything in her record that says she's ready. It really undercuts the argument against Obama."

She also is a Governor that chooses to ignore the law when it suits her political or personal needs. She is currently under state investigation initiated by a bi-partisan committee for misuse of her authority to stop an alleged and probably very dangerous person. However where will society be when ignoring the law is the first response to criminals in times when a general uprising is not imminent -- then we return to the lawless vigilante west, I personally fail to see that as progress.

A governor that resorts to legally questionable actions to protect a single individual is failing to protect all persons in their state by making appropriate changes either administratively or in conjunction with the legislature. I would consider that an example of unsuitable experience because of poor judgment.

Better choices would be to assure adequate first responder priorities and action, where merited timely local police protection, assure state agencies provide assistance in securing restraining orders, assuring adequate safe houses exist, direct state agencies to transport victims and potential victims to safe houses in a timely manner and direct state agencies to suppress potential victim''s locations at a minimum until the necessary legal actions can be completed to assure potential victims safety. In addition where necessary, work with the legislature to strengthen the tools, where necessary to allow for effective deterrence of the perpetrators of any such actions.

Seems to be the stereotypical Republican candidate.

As Governor has already danced around an earmark scandal

A governor that encourages use of an opportune political environment to push an earmark for a bridge to nowhere does not get credit for experience as a reformer later when that governor cancels the project.

From Anchorage Daily News on October 22, 2006
5. %u201CWould you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?%u201D

%u201CYes. I would like to see Alaska''s infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now--while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.%u201D

From Anchorage Daily News on August 31, 2008

The Alaska governor campaigned in 2006 on a build-the-bridge platform, telling Ketchikan residents she felt their pain when politicians called them "nowhere." They''re still feeling pain today in Ketchikan, over Palin''s subsequent decision to use the bridge funds for other projects -- and over the timing of her announcement, which they say came in a pre-dawn press release that seemed aimed at national news deadlines.

"I think that''s when the campaign for national office began," said Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Weinstein noted, the state is continuing to build a road on Gravina Island to an empty beach where the bridge would have gone -- because federal money for the access road, unlike the bridge money, would have otherwise been returned to the federal government.

Sarah Palin is today''''s woman. She understands what women are about. She actually has a family and a job and does well. She has spent more time running her state then Mr. Obama has spent working in the Senate. Mr. Obama has spent the last 1 1/2 yrs. running for president out of three years in the Senate! Who cares how big Alaska is, she runs a state, Mr. Obama didn''''t.
As for Mr. Biden. After almost thirty years in govenment what has he done to make a difference? Did he do anything in all those years to change the energy crisis we have right now? He knew what the 70''''s were like.
No this is the problem with the Washington crowd. They are content to talk a good talk and keep us hanging.
At least McCain has the courage to buck the system in Washington.
Sarah Palin can run circles around these two men.
If Palin had to step in as President, she has more experience in government than Obama. She''''s been involved making decisions since 1992. What exactly has Obama done? His friends are scary. That''''s says alot about the man.

McCainiacs- your posts are very Hannity, very Limbaugh%u2026an EMPTY brain is easy to fill with crud, and the divide and conquer right wing media has filled yours well. My Lincoln to Obama comparison stands%u2026without any substantive rebuttal from anyone%u2026because it is valid%u2026What makes Obama more qualified you ask? How about winning a democratic (that means all the peoples votes counted, not the winner takes all rules of your weak party) Primary, over a talented, well-healed and connected Clinton, and earning about 10 million more votes than your feeble candidate%u2026

This is false. He laid out his plans quite clearly in his acceptance speech last week. Did you listen ? Have you read about his plans on his website ? Just because YOU don''t know his plans doesn''t mean the rest of us don''t.

On issues, as a woman, I just don''''t see the majority of women following palin - she''''s an extremist on abortion and is an opponent of womens rights.

Furthermore, Palin is a Creationist and believes that Crationism should be taught alongside Evolution in public schools. That should disqualify her to serve as Vice President right there.
