2009 and 2010
First Year
Modules in biochemistry; genetics; physiology and cell and tissue biology from the first year of the Medical curriculum. Communication skills, information technology and numeracy. Module in chemistry: principles of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry underpinning the medical sciences.
Second Year
Modules including: molecular cell biology; genetic systems; proteins and enzymes; metabolism; pharmacology; microbiology and immunology. Plus special module on molecular medicine and medical ethics exclusively for Medical Biochemists.
Third Year
Core module on Biochemical Mechanisms of Human Disease, plus three further modules from a wide range including: molecular aspects of disease; protein structure and function; mechanism of drug action; cancer cell and molecular biology; molecular aspects of microbiology (including infection, immunity and virology); membrane physiology; human genetics and inherited disease; gene expression and molecular biology.
Research lab project, these have recently included: Molecular basis of inherited ion channel disorders; Structural studies of novel drug targets in Mycobacterium tuberculosis; The role of tenascin in development of breast tumours; and Mutational analysis of the myc oncogene. Library-based and School-placement (Undergraduate Ambassador) projects are also available.
