Abstract:
The article discusses the extraction of geothermal energy from inactive underground mines in Canada. Based on the data of Marbek and FVB Energy, 25 sites met the screening criteria which include depth of at least 30 meters as a proxy for sufficient mine water temperature and located near potential end-uses to reduce the cost of insulated pipe. Some of the cited most promising sites in Canada are the Noranda copper mine, Con gold mine, and Wellington coal mine. The benefits of geothermal mine water systems are also discussed.
