BitTorrent Giant BTjunkie Shuts Down For Good

BTjunkie, one of the largest BitTorrent indexes on the Internet, has decided to shut down voluntarily today. A combination of legal actions against fellow file-sharing sites and time-consuming projects have led to the drastic decision that takes out one the main players in the BitTorrent landscape.

btjunkieFounded in June 2005, BTjunkie has been among the top BitTorrent sites for more than half a decade.

The site was never involved in any legal action, and to keep it this way the site’s operators decided to shut the site down for good today. The following message was posted on the BTjunkie homepage a few minutes ago:

“This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we’ve decided to voluntarily shut down. We’ve been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it’s time to move on. It’s been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!”

Talking to TorrentFreak, BTjunkie’s founder said that the legal actions against other file-sharing sites such as MegaUpload and The Pirate Bay played an important role in making the difficult decision. Witnessing all the trouble colleagues got into was cause for a lot of worry and stress, and those will now belong to the past.

That said, BTjunkie’s owner still thinks there might be a future for other BitTorrent sites.

“I really do hope so, the war is far from over for sure,” he told TorrentFreak.

While BTjunkie was never targeted directly by copyright holders, the site was reported to the US Trade Representative (USTR) November last year. Both the RIAA and MPAA listed the torrent index as a ‘rogue’ site that facilitated mass copyright infringement.

BTjunkie is also one of the search terms censored by Google because it’s piracy related, alongside The Pirate Bay, RapidShare, uTorrent and others.

As a result of the decision to shut down BTjunkie, one of the top 5 torrent sites with dozens of millions of users a month is no more. Judging from previous shutdowns like that of TorrentSpy and Mininova, users will quickly find a new home at one of the many alternatives.

Nonetheless, it’s the end of an era.

RIP BTjunkie

So you're saying that if I download Star Wars, a copy of it will literally disappear in a puff of smoke from George Lucas's movie collection?

Somehow, Les, I get the impression you literally have no idea what the words "literal" and "stealing" actually mean.

  • Just think of this like a ripple effect: After a big earthquake is fallowed after smaller ones and then a really really BIG... if you overlay it on the internet right now:

    - MagaUpload was shut down
    - Other cyberlokers limited their usage or banned USA, or just went down.
    - Torrent sites freakout and start shutting down.
    - Cheggit and BtJunkie went dark

So whats next... well considering how fast things are going:
    - a massive going dark sites... no new ones to take the place of the old ones, the fear factor is insanly big.

    - So most probably... next ones will be eztv and tpb...

And as I see it now TPB will not survive until summer...

  • "Copying music, movies and software is stealing. "

To say that copying music, movies, and software is stealing is to speak bullshit.

Let's say I copy Die Hard. What exactly did I just steal? And from who? What property just vanished from Bruce Willis' house?

The answer to these questions is twofold:
    1. I didn't steal anything from anybody.
    2. Fuck you, you fucking lying piece of shit.

"Creative people work and don't get paid for their work when you copy."

They don't get paid when I buy their work used, either. What's the difference?
    show more show less
  • Uhhh, first of all, for all of you saying "copying is not illegal" the issue at hand is mostly COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. Which IS illegal.

Furthermore, what has happened with the Internet is that Copyright infringement and illegal distribution has become so easy that pretty much everyone can obtain copies of music/movies/software/etc. illegally. When you have massive amounts of people obtaining goods illegally instead of paying for said goods, we are blurring the lines of theft.

I think you all know damn well you are essentially stealing. This is illegal. You know that too.

And for your "I just don't give a fuck attitude" OP, that's what I'm going to say while I'm raping your asshole. I know it's illegal, I just don't give a fuck. It feels so good!

Sharing (my sperm with your rectum) is caring <3

  • @Bob

Uh huh, an act in which no stealing takes place is "essentially stealing". Gotcha.

Copying is only illegal in certain countries, by the way.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go drink a glass of water, which as I think we all know, is essentially assault with a deadly weapon.

We need the idiotic copyright "law" to change. 2 years max copyright for something and then public domain. No need for 70 years+ AFTER the owner's death for fuck's sake. Even an elementary school student can understand that.

The entertainment industries love to control access to stuff as it keeps the rest of us dumb enough to buy rubbish like 'Jack & Jill'. you think only the rich are entitled to culture & the rest of us should buy the shit you SELL us, well NO!
    show more show less
  • Pycsgozp - You display a complete misunderstanding of copyright law. 'What would have happened if the inventor of the wheel...' blah blah blah. Bleat Bleat Bleat. No one can copyright the 'idea' of a song - just like no one can copyright the 'idea' of a wheel. But if you start selling tyres and passing them off as Good Years', you'd be fined. Just like if you start copying someone else's song and giving it away, you'll be fined. Same incorrect arguments for years and years and years. BORING.

It used to be that the creative industries were the ones in the dark ages - now it's you guys who are stuck in 2005, desperately clinging on to the same out of date arguments that hold no logical basis in an attempt to merelt get whatever you want for free. I don't care if you call it sharing or stealing or fucking wanking.

All of you guys have to come to the realisation that you are playing in to the hands of the big ISPs, Google, and all the big tech companies. You are doing their bidding. Google is a bigger company than all the music companies combined, yet you don't have a problem lining their pockets.

This news reminds of the of day Suprnova closed which was the biggest BT site around until they closed and TPB soon took over.

I am sad they have decided to close now though. The light is at its darkest before the dawn breaks. Our defeat of SOPA & PIPA clearly shows that the corner has been turned and many now call for copyright law reform.

This is indeed a War involving millions but we do not conscript people and never do we shoot those to fail to fight. So BTJunkie has fought the fight they wanted to and now it is over. They had better keep in mind though that our enemy may still see those who quit as a target.

What is most different to the Suprnova case is that BTJunkie users can easily switch to other large BT sites. Back when Suprnova closed there were only small sites up and down often until TPB became fixed.

My last thought is that site owners should remember that TPB 4 were convicted because they run both the site and the tracker. The current format of TPB is untested in Court but like here in the UK similar sites have been found lawful.
    show more show less
  • Can you elaborate on that last paragraph, please.
    show more show less
  • You would need to read TPB trial to see what happened in full.

Back then it was their TPB tracker that proved the real problem because it was the tracker that helped people to download which combined with the nature of TPB site, even if only links, meant they assisted in piracy downloads.

That was the reason why the TPB tracker was quickly spun off into openbittorrent.org when running a tracker on its own, open to all for whatever reason, seems fully lawful.

Then the BT site delinked from the tracker, even if they use other people's trackers, is then only like an announcement site containing links. So the new TPB format is untested in Court and may well be lawful.

As to the UK then no one has ever been convicted of running a BT site yet despite several court cases like OiNK and FileSoup.

Even Richard O'Dweyer with TVShack is making a good case that he has done nothing unlawful. He cannot be extradited to the USA if he has done nothing unlawful in the UK. The first judge to examine the case simply said that the format of TVShack varied slightly (he allowed accounts) from past cases found lawful.

Since the legal status of TVShack is unclear then it should be obvious that a trial needs to be held here in the UK to confirm the legal status before extradition can be approved or denied. In that regard it would be best to host the whole trial here and request ICE to visit.

That makes a good point. Innocent until proven guilty. Why extradite Richard for a crime no person has ever been convicted of and evidence to date more says is not a crime?

lol, amusingly, this won't protect BTjunkie from legal action. The MAFIAA can always go after them for past "crimes". I'd actually want the MAFIAA to try and do that. That way, there will be no incentive for quitting half way through like this.

This is yet another fecken war caused by the USA and their need for greed coz "We, the People" worldwide are now the targets simply because we ask knowledge and information be made freely open and available to all due to the new technology of the internet.

Just because btjunkie has voluntarily shutdown does not mean they are safe. The government can still go after them if they chose to prosecute them for their past crimes within the statute of limitations. Wouldn't surprise me at all if they go after them; after all, just because a thief leaves your house, it does not mean they can't review the security footage and then go after them!

Can't say I used it much, altho was it a mirror site for eztv? Let's hope that place doesn't vanish.
Still sad to see BTJ go.

Is this a case of site runners becoming older and more aware of how much they'd lose if they were sent to jail? If so I'm right there with them. When you're young and just out of school rebellion seems fun and great. When you get a lil older it just seems another layer of hassle amid the actual important things in life.

The important thing for the rest of us is to stay frosty and see how it all plays out whilst doing every LEGAL thing we can to get copyright laws changed in our respective countries.

If you controlled something, would you want a bunch of morons all over it telling you you shouldn't be controlling it?

Be happy they let you on here at all. Be happy the U.S. plays world police so shitty countries like Sweden which have no real military don't have to worry about getting blasted to hell by more aggressive countries.

The U.S. sacrifices certain qualities of life because the rest of the world is too fucking selfish to do it. Meanwhile, when Iran starts nuking the shit out of the EU, who are they going to run to to save them? AMERICA.

This is EXACTLY what the entertainment industry was hoping for. Right this minute, a bunch of execs are drinking champaign and celebrating.
    show more show less
  • IE THEY MADE THERE MONEY AND ARE NOT WILLING TO RISK JAIL
    show more show less
  • I don't know if you could really say they made money.

Much as I would love to tell the BTJ admins to fight it out, you really can't blame them for not wanting to wind up in jail.

It is exactly what the entertainment industry was hoping for... the only solution I can see now is to begin supporting torrent sites headquartered in other countries (these are the ones that will currently survive, and it's up to us to make sure they thrive).

  • I know calling them a coward might be a bit strong but their voluntary closure without any legal pressure is spineless and unforgivable, especially when you have a community of millions who depend on you. The truth is, it should be the AUTHORITY torrent sites such a btjunkie.org that should be leading the free-web, free-information fight-back, not dropping to the floor and curling up into the fetus posistion at the slightest smell of trouble. Its cowardice and down-right irressponsible because this wimpy action actually strengthens their case that torrent sites are doing something wrong.

I'm sorry but this has made me so angry. I never normally get this upset about stuff I see or read on the web but this choice by BTjunkie’s founder makes my blood boil. We are never going to win against all the anti-free-web legistlations if established web authorities don't even put up a fight. I'm just hoping and praying that BTjunkie haven't now started a trend of cowardice where important sites voluntary close their doors through paranoia and self-preservation with no care for the real issues at hand.

I mean, why on earth didn't they just sell btjunkie or hand it over to someone else who is willing to fight for their rights rather than close it down. They could have easily found someone willing within a matter of days if they really wanted too. Just closing the community down makes no rational sense to me and it kinda highlights how they couldn't give a dam about all their members and visitors. They could have even moved their servers into untouchable territories such as China or Iran and publicly terminated any connection to the site so they can't be held responsible for it. There is literally countless strategies they could have chosen rather than just 'give up'.

If I'm honest, I'm actually starting to suspect they were PAID-OFF to close the site by the authorities because voluntary closing a site such as BTJunkie in todays climate creates good propaganda for them and as I said, might scare other sites into closing. For me, this is the only ratonal, logical reason I can think of for the site shuting down in such a way. So, the BTJunkie owners were either cowards or sell-outs. In that case, maybe its for the best that their gone.
