Jake Shields defended his Strikeforce middleweight title belt on Saturday night, beating UFC veteran Dan Henderson in five rounds, but the fighting did not end when the bell rang.

As Shields was being interviewed for the CBS viewing audience, Jason "Mayhem" Miller interrupted him, asking for a rematch. Shields' teammate, Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, took offense to Miller stealing Shields' big moment, and pushed Miller. Shields and Melendez's teammates got in on the action. Strikeforce champ Nick Diaz and his brother, UFC fighter Nate Diaz, were both seen fighting Miller as CBS announcer Gus Johnson tried to end the fight by yelling, "Gentlemen, we're on national television."

Once the brawl broke up, Shields apologized, saying that this was out of character. Shields is known as a mild-mannered man out of the cage, and as he didn't instigate the melee, he doesn't deserve much of the blame.

But that doesn't mean there isn't plenty of blame to go around. Miller shouldn't have interrupted Shields' as he celebrated defeating one of his heroes in MMA.

Miller, the host of MTV's "Bully Beatdown," looks for the spotlight. He and Shields have a longtime beef with one another, and he shouldn't have been there. But Melendez had no business pushing Miller, and the Diaz brothers definitely had no business punching and kicking Miller while he was on the ground.

MMA is a relatively new and growing sport, and it has had very few chances to be on prime-time, network television. The fighters involved in the melee should be ashamed of themselves, as they have now given every opponent of MMA more reason to hate the sport. Instead of focusing on the gentlemanly way most fighters act after a bout has ended -- shaking hands, congratulating each other and each other's fight teams -- fans new to MMA will remember only that a few fighters couldn't let it drop when the final bell rang.

Say goodbye to MMA on CBS, hopefully that is the worst that comes from this, because we may have just witnessed the first step in the ending of MMA.

This couldn't have gotten any better for Dana and the UFC. 1st King Mo beats Gegard 2nd Shields beats Hendo then this brawl happens on live TV. I think Shields goes to UFC and Strike force goes under.

Wow, Jake Shields beats a legend in Dan Henderson, what a comeback. Jake has more heart than any ignorant disrepsectful critical computer tough boys. Maybe now UFC GSP bound and a good contract that he deserves. Strikeforce middleweight champ brazenly moved up in weight, one of the best in the world, imposed his will. The life long Vegetarian kills myths. Post his peta2 video to your friends to stop greedy businesses. Miller the animal bully and fur hag was a chump in the aftermath. Jake and vegan Mac Danzig of the UFC and many more veg athletes prove Vegetarian power. Look up some factory farm videos too.

Sorry, I really mean Diaz values. Anytime someone looks at them wrong or says anything wrong.....it is time to "represent" and all gangsta childish horse [profane]. I mean it was liek 15 -1 with team Gracie kicking Mayhem on the ground. Classless loser. I got no respect for any Diaz. They are a disgrace to the sport. In their head, they are holier than all, and should never, ever, ever, ever be looked at wrong, or h ave anythign said to them.......or they will jump you and beat you, even if it is 15 agaisnt 1.
I hope they get some kind of fine. I hope Mayhem sues them or something. It happened with Koons. It will happen again ANYTIME someone looks at any one of the team. And they dont care if it is all the team vs 1 guy.

i agree with #4, ppl are watching to see fighting....not tennis, golf, etc sports that don't have this sort of tenacity. although i believed there's no business for what happened after the shields win, who cares, because how many casual fans are going to be turned away from the sport because of it? they're targeting the younger male demographics and we're fine with post-match shoving and fighting

with his persona, mayhem miller will be a great draw for whatever promotion he goes to.
hard to tell there's any "beef" there from how shields and miller acted, but melendez punked out a bit, and you always know the Diaz brothers will be happy to throw down...lol.
F cbs...i think this was GOOD for mma. they fight. stop hugging, beat each other up.
Henderson had this fight won TWICE in the first 2 minutes...don't know why he let up.
