    Hi,

    I recently purchaesd my Windows 7 Ultimate and installed it on my PC. However, I installed some updates with Windows Update, but it says a handful of security updates failed, and I can't seem to get them to download. I clicked check update, and nothing seems to come up except language pack updates...I'm sure these updates are crucial, and I'd like to get this working. Can anyone help?

    Going by the graphic you posted showing all of the updates installed ... there is no updating issue.
    As of now, Windows 7 does not have that many updates.

    It's difficult reading the KB numbers showing in the graphic but it appears that all of the updates that previously failed to install are now successfully installed.
    The last successful update was the November release of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool on 11/14.

    However, the updates for Windows Defender are failing.
    What is the installed antivirus/security suite ?
    If the security software contains an antispyware component, then WD is supposed to be Disabled and will no longer update.
    If that's not the case, then right click the last Failed update for WD and choose View details
    The window that will pop up should show an error code next to Error details:

    Open Windows Update in the Control Panel.
    Click the 'View update history ' link.
    Under Status , check to see which Security updates are showing as Failed .

    And, would you please do another check for updates.
    When the check is finished, open the WindowsUpdate.log (WU.log) and copy&paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply.

    To access the WU.log click the Start orb; in the 'Search programs and files' field type in
    windowsupdate.log
    Under 'Programs', click on windowsupdate.log
    Or, under 'Files', click on WindowsUpdate.log
    They are the same file.

    Hi MowGreen,

    I ran the the microsoft fix it utility, which is stickied on top of the forum, and I ran it twice: once or normal, once on aggressive, as each method did not work. Now, I cannot see any failed updates, but I know there are updates to be downloaded.  Here is the WU.log you requested:

    *Please note, I just ran windows update and it detected a definition update for windows defender, but no others, what does this mean?
    Additionally, I took a screenshot before running the utility of all the updates I was not able to install, in addition to the ones that were successful. Please see link: http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/4066/newbitmapimagev.png

    The 34 updates it found as stated in the log are language pack updates, just an fyi.

    Anyway should'nt this be a Microsoft problem & therefor their responsibility to fix?
