The Google logo is being eaten by the Cookie Monster today, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street.

The American educational children's TV series, which is well known for its Muppets characters created by Jim Henson. It premiered on November 10, 1969 and is the longest running children's programme in the U.S.

Celebrities as varied as Jim Carey, James Blunt, Michael Jackson, Ben Stiller, Hilary Clinton and Destiny's Child have made guest appearances.

It comes as a video reveals the popular blue character celebrated Google in a song 27 years ago - long before the World Wide Web was a twinkle in Sir Tim Berners-Lee's eye.

The cookie monster's 'googly eyes' make up the two 'Os' in the latest Google Doodle

Introduced by Kermit the Frog as the 'music event of the century', the song is based on words that rhyme with 'oogle' and is performed by Old MacDoogle on the bugle.

The Cookie Monster is chosen to sing the lyrics, as his 'googly eyes' made him 'one of the world's most famous Googlers,' according to Kermit.

And it seems the search engine company agrees, placing the friendly monster at the top of the Google page.

Google regularly changes its logo for special events. Recently it replaced the 'G' with a picture of Gandhi to mark the day of his birth in 1869. A barcode and Wallace and Gromit have also graced the page.

However, the internet giant had to withdraw an extra letter added to its name for its own anniversary.

The internet giant broke with the tradition of only marking historic events with a doodle for a UFO-inspired mystery that led up to author H.G. Wells' 143rd birthday.

C is for cookie, that's good enough for me. Oh, cookie cookie cookie starts with C!

No wonder children are so obese, when TV characters tell them to eat cookies. It's political correctness gone mad.

Google's celebration began yesterday with Big Bird's feet in the logo and will run until the 10th (the actual 40th anniversary of the first episode). Individual characters each day (although I assume Ernie and Bert will be together!) and the whole cast on the 10th, or so I've been told. And, don't kid yourself, a lot of those kids on YouTube are watching Sesame Street vids, trust me :-) I've been on YT for nearly 4 years (as TinyDancer500), loads of Sesame stuff and the comments are just wonderful. Happy 40th, Sesame Street, and God bless Jim Henson's child-like spirit that's still going strong!

This indeed brings the nostalgia to a lot of people world wide, not sure if kids nowadays would appreciate the good ole sesame street gang if they are always tune to Youtube or facebook playing mafia wars.
