First thoughts: Obama in Turkey

*** Obama in Turkey: On the next-to-last day of his long overseas trip, President Obama is in Ankara, Turkey, where he already has attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Ataturak's Tomb, held a brief bilateral press conference with Turkish President Gul, and addressed the Turkish Parliament. In that speech, Obama said he’s “committed to renewing the alliance between our nations and the friendship between our people.” He added, “Some people have asked me if I chose to continue my travels to Ankara and Istanbul to send a message to the world.” His answer: yes. “Turkey is a critical ally. Turkey is an important part of Europe. And Turkey and the United States must stand together -- and work together -- to overcome the challenges of our time.” Obama also discussed his race when talking about minority rights in Turkey. “I say this as the President of a country that not too long ago made it hard for someone who looks like me to vote. But it is precisely that capacity to change that enriches our countries.” And he touched on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Let me be clear: the United States strongly supports the goal of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security.” Clearly, this speech was about how Turkey can be a major player in achieving Middle East peace.

Video: Obama visits Turkey to try and strengthen U.S. ties with the country and bring stability to the Middle East.

*** The push for the hearts and minds of the Muslim world: Later this morning, Obama holds a bilateral with Prime Minister Erdogan before departing to Istanbul. Of course, Obama’s stop in Turkey is his first visit as president to a predominantly Muslim country. And it’s his latest push for the hearts and minds of the Muslim world. Remember when he said this during his inauguration: “To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.” This morning, at the press conference with President Gul, Obama said he was hopeful to shape a set of policies and strategies to “bridge the divide between the Muslim world and the West.” His visit to this majority-Muslim nation comes as a new Washington Post/ABC poll finds that 81% think it’s “very important” or “somewhat important” for Obama to improve U.S. relations with Muslim nations. However, the poll also shows that 48% of Americans (including six in 10 Republicans and four in 10 Democrats) have an unfavorable opinion of Islam.

Video: Obama's trip alludes to U.S. efforts to smooth relations with the Muslim world.

*** Basketball makes the world go round: Also don’t miss this line from Obama during his speech before Turkey’s Parliament. “The ties among our people have deepened as well, and more and more Americans of Turkish origin live and work and succeed within our borders. As a basketball fan, I've even noticed that Hedo Turkoglu and Mehmet Okur have got some pretty good game.”

*** Cheney vs. Obama: The verbal back-and-forth between former VP Dick Cheney and the Obama administration continued yesterday, when Obama adviser David Axelrod told CNN: “[President Bush] has behaved like a statesman. And as I've said before, here and elsewhere, I just don't think the memo got passed down to the vice president."

*** A solemn ceremony: For the first time since the ban was lifted on covering ceremonies of war dead arriving at Dover Air Force base, the press late last night saw the family of U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant Phillip Myers welcome him home for the last time, NBC’s Courtney Kube reports. On Saturday, April 4, Staff Sgt. Myers was killed by an IED near Helmand Province in Afghanistan. A new Pentagon policy now gives families of the fallen the choice to either allow or deny media coverage of the return of their loved ones remains. Kube adds that Staff Sgt. Myers' remains arrived on a commercial 747 late Sunday night. The U.S. military flew his widow in from Royal Air Force Base Lakenheath, United Kingdom, so she could be there to witness the brief 15-minute ceremony. Several of their relatives from nearby Hopewell, VA were also present. Myers was a demolition expert, assigned to the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron. He is now among the nearly 5,000 men and women who were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and whose remains have transited through Dover.

*** Cracking down: Meanwhile, in DC today, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Attorney General Eric Holder, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, and Illinois AG Lisa Madigan will hold a press conference at the Treasury Department to announce a new multi-agency effort to crack down on foreclosure rescue scams and loan modification fraud.

*** The politics of baseball: And per NBC’s Dax Tejera, two political VIPs today will throw out the Opening Day first pitch. Vice President Joe Biden will do the honors for the Baltimore Orioles (and he’ll be joined by eight boys and girls from the Baltimore Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities League), while George W. Bush will hurl the opening pitch at the Texas Rangers’ season opener.

Obama has been running around Europe for nearly week telling Europeans America is arrogant and that Europe rocks. And what does he have to show for it? Absolutely nothing.
While Obama babbles on and on about a "nuclear free world", North Korea sends a missile flying over his head. Here Obama, try this one, just stop the North Koreans from building up their nuclear capabilities first, then we'll worry about your fantasy dreams of a nuclear free world later.
when Obama adviser David Axelrod told CNN: "[President Bush] has behaved like a statesman. "

-----------

Which is less then we can say for Obama. Obama has continually blamed Bush for everything under the sun and has taken zero responsibility for his own problems. It has been traditional in America that the old presidents remain quiet about the new presidents governering of the country. Apparently Carter and Clinton didn't get that memo as they were out there day in and day out railing against Bush. It is also tradition that the new president doesn't cut down the old president. Obama, the classless current president apparently didn't get that memo either.

Obama is nothing but a left wing hack. That's what you get for electing a junior senator from a corrupt state to the highest office.
Obama trip can't be described as anything less than a success.

The storylines going in were about global divisions and hostility towards Obama and the U.S.

Now, besides North Korea, the buzz is about Obama's surging popularity with leaders and his ability to cool the tensions at G-20.

Obama adviser David Axelrod told CNN: “[President Bush] has behaved like a statesman.

The last of his statement should have been...

"But appearantly the memo never got passed to President Obama"

All the media managed to cover his casualness with the queen. Which is no big deal. What you all managed to bury deep, was the 'servant's bow' that he gave the Saudi King. What the hell. For days you guys talk and talk about shaking hands with the queen, Mrs Obama touched the queens back, the queen touched her first, blah, blah. But not one word about the subservient, from the waist, deep bow he gave the King of a Muslim nation. Talk about two faced reporting. At least your consistant.
No report on Iowa's ruling on Same Sex Marriage.  With a Vermont Veto from Douglas coming today and a potential override tomorrow, I thought for sure that'd be covered today.
Has any political pundit ever had a meaningful relationship?

If you have, then you know that relationships start with small steps, frequent contacts and mutual trust.  If pundits have not, then you will start making analysis, like "President Obama is not getting much of what he wants".  Pundits just don't get it.  That countries will not give their youth to war after just one visit.  They have had a mean-spirited Bush 43 for 8 years.  It takes time to form trust and new alliances.

So is President Obama's trip a success?  Without a doubt.  Alliances with France, Turkey, England are forming.  Thinking pundits should be asking, "Whow will Russia respond to President Obama and the new alliances that are forming?"  "Will Russia want to partner or act like republicans and be obstructionists?

Speaking of republicans, they too should be proud of our President's efforts.  If they cannot be proud, then then must be the Rush Limbaugh folks that want America to fail.
Another week of style without substance.  Obama charms the crowds in Europe by bashing America, keeping his popularity high which is just so terribly important.  But he achieves no actual results, and few take notice.
First Read, it is Ataturk, not Ataturak!!!

To Cam, what did you expect he was going to come back with?  What he has gained (or recouped) is the beginning of the restoration of America's image abroad...

To Lynn, Obama is doing his best on the nuclear front...  After including N. Korea in the "Axis of Evil," Bush did nothing for 6 years and allowed N. Korea to develop and test nuclear weapons.  Your gripe is with the last Administration, not Obama.  Obama has proved himself to be pragmatic, potentially to a fault, so he is not merely "fantasizing," he is aiming high for the elimination of nuclear weapons, but you're naive if you think he doesn't understand the obstacles ahead.
'...“To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect.”...'

After the Arrogant Disaster of the last 8 years
Sometimes, being an arrogant idiot lsn't enough

In case people didn't notice, Bush/Cheney committed their 'War Crimes' against Muslims exclusively

Just keep saying '911' and maybe that'll excuse Crimes against Humanity

Lisa Madigan from Illinois? Nice to see Lisa is doing something I guess. There has been no corruption in Illinois for her to clean up, so now it looks like she's going national to continue all of her good work (Sarcasm meter pegged at 100 for that little jab).
Obama is a two-faced idiot.  If he hates this country so much, why doesn't he just move to Europe and stay there.  Or maybe Saudi Arabia.  He can bow to the king every morning and kiss his butt while he's down there.
Was that "Obama's in Turkey" or "Obama's A turkey?"

Either way the shoe fits and that's being nice consdiering all the damage he's done to the economy.

Does Obama know what countries and oceans border the
United States? Earnest T. Bass does.

Can Obama name the capitols of all 57 states?

Michelle looked a "little"  better over the weekend but hubby was deliberately upstaged by the North Korean missle launch.

Lynn Wheatly: '...just stop the North Koreans from building up their nuclear capabilities first, then we'll worry about your fantasy dreams of a nuclear free world later....'

Maybe Obama can following the successful techniques used by George Bush

That worked REALLY Well, didn't it ??
War Criminal Cheney should keep his arrogant ignorant mouth shut.  He is responsible for screwing up our secular democracy with his criminal secrecy and stupid ideas.

Having a nuclear free world is the best idea we've heard in a long time.  Anyone who doesn't want a nuclear free world is nuts.

I'm glad that Barack is holding out the olive branch to the Muslim world after the bushwhacker and his evagelical christian lunatic fringers wanted unholy war against Islam for generations to come.  Just so sad that religion is the root of all evil in the world and so many are swayed by it's siren song of lies and intolerance.

In Obama We Trust!
You Say Hello, The Neocons Say Goodbye.

And per NBC’s Dax Tejera, two political VIPs today will throw out the Opening Day first pitch. And up here, Senator Ted Kennedy will be throwing out the first pitch @ Fenway. Rain is in the forecast unfortunately.

If President Obama's goal on his trip was to regain our country's respect in other parts of the world, then he succeeded. I couldn't believe the crowds he attracted. But he's young, he's new, he's smart, he's humorous, he's thoughtful, and most important, he's reaching out to the younger generations.

Not many other leaders in the world are doing this. It's kind of like the Beatles vs. Pat Boone in 1964.

Job Well Done President Obama.

Goodbye Cheney, GWB, all of you - forever.
In 2010 news, Specter continued to attack Toomey with an unexpectedly aggressive strategy this week-end, and John Thune looks ultra-safe in a new poll, even if he were to face Tom Daschle (Details: http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/04/05/gop-senators/ )
The Last Democrat - "French President Nicolas Sarkozy said after Obama's remarks that the decision was the EU's to make, not Washington's."

France. The one European country in the UN Security Council to vote against putting pressure on Iraq to comply with all the UN resolutions George Bush built against Iraq. And Obama has the guts to say that Europe has "Led the world" in international issues. Obama is deranged and the French are cowards. Obama and the French make a good pair.
The question of whether the press should be permitted access to record the return of the bodies of our servicemen and women, I agree the family should have the ultimate decisionmaking aauthority.  I am more troubled, however, by a news item in my morning newspaper about a former employee of a funeral home in Falls Church, VA. that handles burial services for Arlington National Cemetary.  According to the former employee, who has provided notes and photos to the Washington Post, during his nine months of employment he witnessed as many as 200 corpes of our military personnel being stored in an unrefrigerated garage and on temporary gurneys in hallways.  Beyond sad.
I hope we dont get one more technologically backward comment on teleprompters here again.

A teleprompter aint nothing but electronic notes.

This president carries a blackberry, uses a laptop, does web conferences, and types his comments digitally. Complaints only expose republicans as anti-science and anti-technology or simply backward at best.

And to Cam. That would be the conclusion when you dont read the news in full or when you prefer silly summaries that avoid parts of the whole story. He totally praised and defended the US as well. But to have credibility, you need to acknowledge what is obvious before moving on. How well did the empty praises of self gotten the country during the Bush years.
Lynn Wheatly: '...just stop the North Koreans from building up their nuclear capabilities first, then we'll worry about your fantasy dreams of a nuclear free world later....'

Have you blamed your Bush today? MSirerra has! Join the crowd!!

And for the record. Bush managed to get the nuclear reactor, the reactor whose technology and materials were given to the North Koreans by Clinton and NotSoBright Albright, dismantled. Obama reaction to North Koreas lauching of a missile? "They broke the rules!" Obama bellowed. North Korea is shaking in its boots over that response.
To Brent Reynolds, Reedsburg, NC:

Brent,

Traditionally, former President's are not being investigated around the globe for war crimes, and here at home for aiding and abetting the current financial meltdown by turning a blind eye to rampant corruption.

President Bush is reaping what he has sown. It is not President Obama's responsibility to protect the Bush Administration from the truth about the huge hole they dug in this country and in the world.

Sorry if your delicate sensibilities cannot handle the truth, but don't try and use "tradition" as an excuse to transfer blame from where it belongs to the current Amdinistration.

That pig won't fly.
HEY !!
Let's cover up TORTURE !!
Let's keep people from knowing the TRUTH about TORTURE !!

'...by linking the votes to suppressing critical torture memos from the Bush era...'

From Washington Monthly:

'...Republicans: You Lost.

Scott Horton:

"Senate Republicans are now privately threatening to derail the confirmation of key Obama administration nominees for top legal positions by linking the votes to suppressing critical torture memos from the Bush era. A reliable Justice Department source advises me that Senate Republicans are planning to "go nuclear" over the nominations of Dawn Johnsen as chief of the Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) in the Department of Justice and Yale Law School Dean Harold Koh as State Department legal counsel if the torture documents are made public. The source says these threats are the principal reason for the Obama administration's abrupt pull back last week from a commitment to release some of the documents. A Republican Senate source confirms the strategy. It now appears that Republicans are seeking an Obama commitment to safeguard the Bush administration's darkest secrets in exchange for letting these nominations go forward. (...)

The Justice Department source confirms to me that Brennan has consistently opposed making public the torture memos -- and any other details about the operations of the extraordinary renditions program -- but this source suggests that concern about the G.O.P.'s roadblock in the confirmation process is the principle reason that the memos were not released. Republican senators have expressed strong reservations about their promised exposure, expressing alarm that a critique of the memos by Justice's ethics office (Office of Professional Responsibility) will also be released. "There was no 'direct' threat," said the source, "but the message was communicated clearly -- if the OLC and OPR memoranda are released to the public, there will be war." This is understood as a threat to filibuster the nominations of Johnsen and Koh. Not only are they among the most prominent academic critics of the torture memoranda, but are also viewed as the strongest advocates for release of the torture memos on Obama's legal policy team.

A Republican Senate staffer further has confirmed to me that the Johnsen nomination was discussed at the last G.O.P. caucus meeting. Not a single Republican indicated an intention to vote for Dawn Johnsen, while Senator John Cornyn of Texas was described as "gunning for her," specifically noting publication of the torture memos.

That's a lot more plausible than Newsweek's claim that the administration does not want to embarrass countries whose names it could simply redact. It's also completely appalling.

For one thing, the slurs on Koh and Johnsen are vile. They are widely respected legal scholars. For heaven's sake, Ted Olsen, Bush's solicitor General and his lawyer in Bush v. Gore, supports Koh:

"The President and the Secretary of State are entitled to have who they want as their legal adviser," Olson said in a phone interview with me.

Olson was sharply dismissive of claims that Koh is too solicitous of international law. While he declined to discuss the specifics of the case against Koh, much of which has been already debunked, he pushed back hard against the broader claim that Koh's regard for international law is cause for suspicion.

"I have the greatest respect for Harold Koh," Olson said. "He's a brilliant scholar and a man of great integrity."

Besides the ugliness of the attacks, what the Republicans are doing is really unprecedented. First, the President has traditionally been given deference in the choice of his advisors. If some President wants to have someone in his cabinet, the presumption is that he ought to be able to do so, absent illegality or some sort of manifest incompetence. For the Republican Senators to hold these appointees up not for those reasons, but because they disagree with their policies, is just wrong; if this happened every time a new administration came into office, the opposition party would filibuster half the nominations and no one would never govern at all.

Second, what the Republicans are trying to do is to dictate to the President a matter that is purely his prerogative: deciding whether or not to unclassify documents. This is insane: it's as though Obama threatened to withhold funding for the Senate unless Mitch McConnell fired some staffer he didn't like. [UPDATE: Adam Serwer points out that it isn't even optional: a judge has ordered that the memos be turned over.]

And the combination -- holding appointments hostage while trashing people's reputations in order to keep Obama from making a decision he plainly has the right to make -- is unconscionable.

I am not, in general, a big fan of saying: Republicans: you lost. Get over it. But in this case, I'm going to make an exception. The Republicans do not seem to be willing to allow the President to do things that are plainly his prerogative: appointing the reasonable, qualified, law-abiding people of his choice, deciding which documents should be declassified, and so forth. Any moment now they'll threaten not to pass the budget unless he sets his air conditioner at their preferred temperature.

Two other things: first, I would hope that not every Republican will go along with the idea of filibustering these nominees. They don't have to like them. They don't have to vote for them. But they should recognize the difference between not supporting a nominee and being willing to filibuster him or her. Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Dick Lugar, and Orrin Hatch: I'm looking at you.

Second: this is one more piece of evidence that the Senate is broken. It needs to change its rules. I support keeping the filibuster for judicial nominations, which are for life. I can imagine a world with a sane opposition in which I would support keeping it generally. But this is not that world. At the very least, the rules need to be changed to force people who want to filibuster to actually be present in the Senate chamber. ...'
Turning are Americans against The Obama.
FR: "Hours after North Korea’s missile test, President Obama on Sunday called for new United Nations sanctions and laid out a new approach to American nuclear disarmament policy . . . . "

Yes. All those others of dozens of sanctions against North Korea have worked so well up until now.
David Axelrod is correct to trash War Criminal Cheney's attacks on Obama's national security measures.  It's not like the war criminal kept us safe after 9/11, just look at all the dead brave US soldiers who were killed in that farce for oil in Iraq that are on the hands of the two war criminals.  Al Qaeda is now stronger than ever thanks to the idiots of war who couldn't shoot straight or tell the truth.

When will Alaskans get a clue that they've been had by Flim Flam Palin and her scam of bribing taxpayers by bankrupting her state's budget?  How long does Alaska remain the laughing stock of states for having the sorriest excuse ever of a governor?  Come on Alaska time to wake up and get rid of the bag lady ripping you off $60 a pop whenever she thinks she's worked from home!

I really enjoyed last week when late night hosts made so much fun of Fox and Freaks and their clueless gang of bozo commentators.  I imagine we'll be seeing Glenn Henpecked cry again as he whines about being attacked by the big liberal conspiracy led by Keith and MSNBC.  Ridicule Fox and Freaks Daily!

Hey first day of the new Ed Schultz Show!  Plus before that two hours of David Shuster!  Great new day at MSNBC tv as the liberal lineup gets stronger.

Dear Republicans keep spinning-I don't need to be 'told' what to think, I know what to think-and it is this-

it is traditional for leaders to hold hands to show solidarity in the middle east; in fact, it was a show of unity not extended to any other president.

One bows to show subservience; no American bows to any monarch.  Which is why Michelle Obama did NOT  cursy before the Queen-Americans don't, as we have no monarch, nor do we recognize any authority.

No, Nashville Fan, but it is President Obama's responsibility to not trash our country when in other countries.  I remember an interview years ago with President Ford who refused to badmouth any other president, stating it was an honor code among former and current Presidents.  Sadly, Obama has failed to recognize that.

I am irritated by the partisan grumblers on here who have zero understanding of our economic dependence on other countries and less than zero understanding of diplomacy.

Obama played it beautifully, admitting we are not perfect but also defending our place in the world. You do not move mountains overnight. It takes patience and perseverance and Obama has both. His charm offensive is a means to an end and that end is to maintain America's leadership role in the global community. If we could do everything by ourselves, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in right now.

There were so many amazing, mesmerizing moments in this trip. His speech in Prague was like something out of a movie. Just think back to the embarrassment regularly experienced by Bush whenever he showed his face in public. It is truly a breath of fresh air and a source of incredible pride to have someone like Obama represent our country and yes, I will describe anyone who didn't feel it this week as unpatriotic.
Speaking of baseball's opening day, isn't Obama going on ESPN later today to unveil his predictions for the divisional, league, and World Series champions?
Also surprised his administration didn't buy 30 minutes of half-time campaigning air time during the basketball game tonight on CBS.
Brent/Cam and all you other right wing nuts need to either broaden their horizons by traveling the world to grasp the fact about different cultures, histories and languages. Individuals like yourselves love to demonize anyone that's not from this country. IF YOU GUYS HAD TAKEN THE COTTON OUT OF YOUR EARS AND/OR STOPPED WATCHING FOX NEWS you would realize that he followed the comment about 8 years (obvious references to the Bush) of that arrogance to also lecturing about not bashing Americans/USA. You guys and others on this blog choose to ignore history, remain ethnocentric, and bascially hold on too right wing fear mongering that the majority in this country have thankfully do not buy into anymore. News Flash! Bush/Darth vader has made us less safe than when started ie., Afganistan. I am pretty sure you guys have a problem with his middle name and will jump on any statements Potus makes.Did you guys comment when the Shrub attempted to sell to Dubai port security for a profit. I guess not.
Lynn Wheatly,

Not one single shoe thrown at President Obama during his trip. Can you say the same for Bush's last trip?
Nope. Guess President Obama's trip WAS a success.
Why do you think Eric Holder is reviewing and releasing the memos on torture?  Suspenseful night time reading?  Get real.

Oh, so the US is investigating Bush. Wonders never cease in the so-called mind of a Liberal. And of course you jump about 81 conclusions to come to the belief that Bush is the target. Kool-aide is being passed out free today, isn't it?

Juan - please list where Europe has led on anything in the last decade - either in the fight against terrorism, economically, technical innovation, anything. You'll find that Europe is stuck on a big fat ZERO. They've done nothing. And it's not arrogant for the US to point that out to them. Obama is pretending that Europe is important. He, Obama, is delusional.
