Two new GMail features you must try

This week GMail has added two exciting new features. One is about always displaying images from your contacts and the other is about easy unsubscription.

Always displaying images from your contacts:

As we all know ,GMail doesn't display external images automatically for security reasons.Users click on "Display Images Below" to see the images. But think about it ,we get lots of messages from the people we know and we always trust them.So why GMail should not display images automatically when I get a message from a known person? Hold on-Now onwards GMail will do that for you.You will now get to see those images by default from those people whom you have Emailed at least twice.
This is what GMail says about this particular threshold:-
Note that we picked this threshold of two messages to start with, but we may tweak it if it doesn't seem right going forward.

Read more about this here.

Easy Unsubscription:
It is well known that GMail offers the best automatic spam filtering service. It still wants to do more about it.Do you remember how many services you have subscribed in the past and stopped using now.Did I also tell you that you still keep getting messages from them and you find it difficult to search through the messages for that little unsubscribe link? Then GMail is going to help you out in unsubscribing. It has launched a new feature to automate the unsubscription process and make it easier for you.Now when you click on "Report spam" for some of the mailing lists you want to unsubscribe ,you will see a dialog as shown below:

When you click on "Unsubscribe and report spam" , GMail will automatically send a request back to the sender on behalf of you, requesting them to unsubscribe you from the mailing list. You can also do this without reporting the message as spam.To do this click "show details" in the top-right corner of the message, then click "Unsubscribe from this sender" .

This is what GMail says about this particular feature:-
This only works for some senders right now. We're actively encouraging senders to support auto-unsubscribe — we think 100% should. We won't provide the unsubscribe option on messages from spammers: we can't trust that they'll actually unsubscribe
you, and they might even send you more spam. So you'll only see the unsubscribe option for senders that we're pretty sure are not spammers and will actually honor your unsubscribe request. We're being pretty conservative about which senders to trust in the beginning; over time, we hope to offer the ability to unsubscribe from more email.

Photo Tagging made easy in Social Networking Sites

Last week Orkut launched a face detection feature which automatic detects faces in your orkut album photos. Please remember, this will work with all the new photos that you upload. This means that you will not see the changes till the time you upload new photos.Orkut says that the algorithm used to detect the faces is not perfect and may not work properly with difficult lighting ,poses, etc.

It has also made the tagging process easier by introducing an auto-fill feature which suggests names from your friends list while tagging.I think the next logical step for orkut will be to provide a way to apply the same technique to the existing uploaded photos. One more thing I would like to see is ,it should remember the tag associated with a particular face and tag it automatically with the same name when I upload another photo having the same face.

On 21st ,Face.com launched an application called Photo Tagger for facebook users which can scan through the selected albums to help automate the tagging process. It will be able to suggest tags after scanning and once you confirm the tags, the application will automatically push the tags and will notify the tagged people. The bad news ,photo Tagger is currently in alpha .If you want to help Photo Tagger in testing then you can register to join the testers group.

From gabbr.com about this particular feature :
In our tests, the most common mistake it made was to identify a picture of a friend's child as the friend themselves - a problem that has a lot to do with how facial features between related family members are so alike. But for the most part, the app identified photos correctly.

Yahoo Search Using Gears ?

The web is discussing about the new yahoo home page for last two days and I also thought of visiting the same.Accidentally I used yahoo search in Chrome and found that it is asking for that familiar message from Google Gear .I wanted to check when it was introduced and how it can be used in offline mode. But I did not find much information about this and found that other people are also asking the same question.

Can any one provide more information about this?

How to remove "Messages from people you may know" from yahoo mail home page

Today I logged in to my Yahoo Mail account and saw some changes in the home page.Though these features were launched quite some time back I didn't notice them since I use GMail and rarely log in to my yahoo Mail account these days.

From the Mail Home page I can update my status ,can quickly see messages from some known people and see the top stories in a tabbed frame across different categories.

Now the interesting part is do a google search with "Messages from People You May Know" and you know that some people are not happy with it and want ways to get rid of it.If you are one of them who is looking to remove the same feature then continue reading.

In your Mail home page go to Options->Mail Options (right hand side) and you can see "Enable Connections" is selected by default.I assume by this time you already know the solution .If you still do not know then uncheck it ,save your changes and now you will be glad to know that the feature no longer appears in your home page.

Visit The moon Inside Google Earth

Google today announced the launch of Moon in Google Earth to help people learn about space ,moon and other exciting discoveries. This is Google's way of remembering 20Th July 1969, when two human beings landed on the moon for the first time.

This is an educational tool and will help everyone interested in exploring more about the space.Google has chronicled all the Apollo landing missions through pictures and stories.Using the tool you can visit around the sky ,fly to mars and moon and simultaneously can use all the traditional Google Earth Controls and read all the associated contents. You can also view the 3D models of landed spacecraft and watch those rare Apollo missions TV footage.

Watch this video to know more.

You need Google Earth 5.0 to get started and can find more about the topic here. This was developed in collaboration with NASA Ames research and Japan's space agency JAXA .

Lessons learned in Twitter document leak fiasco

Last week the social media was dominated by the twitter document security issue.TechCrunch received some confidential twitter documents and screenshots. Immediately after the news broke out ,the blogosphere started speculating about the cause of the attack. As the time passed by Techcrunch was able to convince the attacker for a dialog and extracted some information from the attacker.

Summary of how the attack really happened(From TechCrunch):

1.HC accessed Gmail for a Twitter employee by using the password recovery feature that sends a reset link to a secondary email. In this case the secondary email was an expired Hotmail account, he simply registered it, clicked the link and reset the password. Gmail was then owned.

2.HC then read emails to guess what the original Gmail password was successfully and reset the password so the Twitter employee would not notice the account had changed.

3.HC then used the same password to access the employee’s Twitter email on Google Apps for your domain, getting access to a gold mine of sensitive company information from emails and, particularly, email attachments.

4.HC then used this information along with additional password guesses and resets to take control of other Twitter employee personal and work emails.

5.HC then used the same username/password combinations and password reset features to access AT&T, MobileMe, Amazon and iTunes, among other services. A security hold in iTunes gave HC access to full credit card information in clear text.

6.Even at this point, Twitter had absolutely no idea they had been compromised.

While you can read the fullpost here from TechCrunch ,what did we really learn from the whole episode?

It is time to repeat those statements.

1.Never use the same password for different accounts.
2.Do not use password recovery question.
3.If you have a GMail account ,use the password recovery option through text messaging.
4.Do not set a password which can easily be guessed. This is particularly important since a lot of personal information about us is so easily available on the web.
5.If you can not do the above for all your accounts,at least keep very different passwords and keep changing them for your primary active accounts.
6.Immediately delete the clear text passwords you receive in your inbox ,while opening account with some service providers.

One thing comes to my mind at this stage :What if the web mail providers force the users to change their password at regular intervals?(We do the same thing with our corporate accounts too).

There is an interesting statement from Techcrunch about the cloud services after this attack:
Cloud services are convenient and cheap, and can help a company grow more quickly. But security infrastructure is still nascent. And while any single service can be fairly secure, the important thing is that the ecosystem most certainly is not.

Thanks to TechCrunch for handling the story in an efficient way.

Eclipse India Summit 2009:Day2

I am here at the Chancery Pavilion attending the Day 2 proceedings of Eclipse India Summit 2009 organised by saltmarch.

The Morning session started with a plenary talk from Mr Dhiraj Bhandari from Oracle .He talked about OEPE (Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse),ORM WorkBench and Jax-Ws Webservices. He also touched upon a new feature from OEPE called Fast Swap which will help the developers in faster iterative development.
There was another talk by Mr Bharath Kasthurirengan about Enhancing the Productivity of RAD Using Websphere.

Then I attended three different sessions
First session was about Google AppEngine for Java and Eclipse Developers By Mr Janakiram MSV

He gave a short introduction about Google AppEngine and How to get started with Google AppEngine,How to access data on the cloud, and How to develop & deploy your applications to AppEngine using Eclipse.

This was a fantastic session and I'm sure others who are interested in Google App Engine would have enjoyed it.This was the best session in EIS(Eclipse India Summit) 09 for me.You can reach Mr Janakiram MSV here.

Check this video if you are Interested in knowing more about AppEngine.

You can visit the Google AppEngine page to know more.

Now Submit and Promote your favourite Google Documents as templates

Let us take a practical example .You have created a very good spreadsheet using Google Documents for doing some financial calculation and think it will be helpful for others also.So can you publish and promote your document as a template?

Google has opened up the template gallery to the public and allows you to do just the same.Once you submit your template any one using Google Docs will be able to use it as a template.Templates need not be only Spreadsheets. It can be documents, presentations, spreadsheets and even forms. You can also embed the template to your own website once you upload the template to the public gallery.

I'm sure this is going to bring a lot of creativity into the google docs space. This will also increase and promote the use of google docs.

One word of caution:If you make any changes after a template is submitted, the changes will be displayed in the public gallery immediately. So be careful with your changes. It is better to make a copy of the published template and work with that before publishing the changes.

You can read more about the topic in this blog post from google docs.

Eclipse India Summit 2009

I am here at the Chancery Pavilion attending the Eclipse India Summit 2009 organised by saltmarch. So far the summit has been going very well and I'm going to take you through few sessions that I have already attended.

The Morning session started with a plenary talk from Mr Ramkumar Kothandaraman from Microsoft about the Interoperability @Microsoft.He talked about PHP in windows ,PHP sdk in Windows Azure and the contribution Microsoft has made to the Apache POI project to add support of the Open XML file format .Basically the session was about the open source work Microsoft has been into in the recent times. You can get more details about the Apache POI project in this blog post.

The next session I attended was about Graphical Editing Framework(GEF) by Mr Annamalai from Ancit Consulting and Lavanya Konda from Progress Software.

From Eclipse site:
GEF allows developers to take an existing application model and quickly create a rich graphical editor.GEF consists of 2 plug-ins. The org.eclipse.draw2d plug-in provides a layout and rendering toolkit for displaying graphics. The developer can then take advantage of the many common operations provided in GEF and/or extend them for the specific domain. GEF employs an MVC (model-view-controller) architecture which enables simple changes to be applied to the model from the view.GEF is completely application neutral and provides the groundwork to build almost any application, including but not limited to: activity diagrams, GUI builders, class diagram editors, state machines, and even WYSIWYG text editors.

The next session After lunch I attended was about J Optimizer from Embarcadero. This session was really helpful in guiding how to solve memory leaking issues in java.

J Optimizer offers:
1.Memory and CPU Profiler
2.Thread Debugger
3.Request Analyzer
4.Code Audits and Metrics
5.Multi-Platform Support

According to Embarcadero
J Optimizer delivers a breakthrough solution for isolating and resolving performance issues during the development of Java programs and Java EE applications. Providing Java developers with a comprehensive environment for optimizing application performance and managing application quality throughout the development lifecycle,
J Optimizer enables you to deliver fast, scalable, and reliable applications.

There were also parallel sessions about Java Persistence ,Building Data Centric RIAs using eclipse,Eclipse patterns,Eclipse 3.5 PDE target platform and Design case study of a Complex Development Tool Built on GEF.

Thanks to Saltmarch Media for arranging the wonderful summit.I'm sure it'll help the developer community to get more information about the Eclipse-based tools and technologies.

bingtweets:real time search offering from bing

Bing has partnered with Federated Media and Twitter to bring BingTweets ,which displays twitter and bing search results in a single new interface.

The new interface has two search boxes ,two results panel (from bing and twitter) ,one trending topics panel from twitter and one panel to share the results. One search box allows you to search Bing and Twitter at the same time.

Bing results are displayed on the main part while twitter results are displayed on a side bar. This is useful for people who use twitter and bing a lot.You can also see the twitter trending topics on the top categorized under Popular Now,people,Places and Products.

This is what Bing says in a blog post regarding the partnership with Twitter.
How does partnering with Twitter make Bing a more effective decision engine? Many people share their thoughts on Twitter, and search engines don’t currently do a great job of capturing that real-time content. We designed Bing to help you make faster, more informed decisions, and, since people often turn to real-time content to help them make decisions, BingTweets was a logical next step.

GMail Tasks graduates from labs, same model launched in Calendar

GMail tasks, one of the most popular experimental GMail features becomes the first graduate from Labs.It is now accessible directly under the contacts link above the chat list.

It has also extended the Labs model to the Google Calendar ,meaning you will now see new Google Calendar features under Google Calendar labs.It has introduced six new features such as Next Meeting ,Free or Busy,World Clock,Background Image,Attach google docs,Jump to Date under Google Calendar Labs.

This is what the GMail post says:
We've received a lot of positive feedback about Gmail Labs, and we've found that testing something in Labs can be a good way to help decide whether it should become a regular part of Gmail. So we decided to extend the same model to Google Calendar.

If you are a developer you will be happy to know that google has also released and experimental API for Calendar.

You can read the full blog post about the tasks here.

Super-trustworthy anti-fishing key:new in GMail Labs

GMail introduced a new interesting labs feature to protect the inboxes from spam and phising. It ensures that the email is actually from the intended person (for eBay and PayPal Now).
It does that by checking the "From" header and ensuring that it actually came from ebay.com . All other mails won't even appear in the spam folder and will be rejected by Gmail.

This is what GMail says in its blog post:
It's a bit of work for senders to make their email super-trustworthy, which is why this feature is limited to just eBay and PayPal right now. We hope to add more senders in the future, and when we do, you'll know because you'll see the super-trustworthy key icon magically appear by those senders too.
You can enable it by going to Labs tab under settings .
