Books: What Is In a Name?

Click for ordering information What Is In a Name? by Anasuya Sastry is a compilation of traditional Indian names and their meanings. It is available in English and Kannada. Your purchase benefits the Chaitanya Educational Foundation. Following is an excerpt from the book's foreword:

"This is a hand book of INDIAN NAMES and their connotation. The names are so arranged that it is easy to locate the name one is searching for and to find out what it means. The purpose of this list is to assist Indian parents to cull out the most suitable name to the baby that is expected in the family. Every parent wishes to select a name that is at once sweet to utter and easy to interpret. Times have changed and people are no longer interested only in the oldish names of gods and goddesses. They want something different, while still holding on to traditional flavour and religious beliefs. Mrs. Anasuya Sastry comes from a family of scholars. She is herself highly informed in Indian puranic lore and has put in very hard work in compiling this detailed collection of names. Reading through the names in this list you come across so many new names that you will begin to make a short list, for a later final selection.

"This booklet is an exercise in compilation with an altruistic motive. I congratulate Mrs. Shastry on her work and recommend it to all those who are expecting a newcomer into the family."

The author writes:

"This collection was originally prepared by myself and my grandfather in Sept. 1982 at Los Angeles, U.S.A., the occasion being the Namakaranotsava of our first grand baby AKHILA. I had taken my grandfather aged 92 years for this purpose of naming his great great grand child, and the first child of my daughter, Lalita and son-in-law, Anant. We then had produced a small list of names, referring to Lalita and Vishnu Sahasranama books. Successively, all our children S.N. Prasad, Lalita, Ram Prasad named their babies according to that list only.

"When we had to name S.N. Prasad and Sunita's baby TEJAS, in Madison, Wisconsin, U.S.A., in 1989, they wanted me to find out the meanings for the names of that list, so that, it would be interesting to know the meanings also, while naming the baby. They got me Sanskrit/English dictionary by VAMAN SHIVARAM APTE, from Madison University library for this purpose.

"So, while trying to find out the meanings, I came across many more names, which tempted me to write a book of names along with their meanings.

"The babies are truly blessed by my loving grand parents who lived a noble life in their beautiful house in Channapatna. They loved children, and enjoyed caring for the children of the neighbourhood also."

With Love,
Anasuya Sastry
