I can empathize with the people who have been taught that pity and charity are synonymous. I was taught the same. Being both poor and having three children with autism, we’ve experienced a lot of pity and a lot of charity (often from unexpected sources). They feel different, which is how I learned to make the distinction.

Pity is a very ugly thing, but often it is not intended to be so by the person expressing it. It’s not intentional harm, but ignorance. I hope the distinction can be learned, despite what people have been taught, without being in the position to learn it through experience.
