After the tampon incident, Thomas assumes Jackie won't want to walk home with them--but Jackie takes the situation better than Thomas does. One of the first major hints that Thoma is an unreliable narrator. My absolute favorite scene is when Thomas and Charlie do the skit--though I wonder how Thomas could possibly know the choreography--and Thomas finally enters Charlie's world, though he's become more comfortable allowing Charlie into his. Yes, many of the factors you mentioned in the second paragraph are hard to watch, or can be. My favourite parts: Probably where Jackie and Thomas go into the river.
