Man’s Best Friend Deserves The Best Dog Food
Every dog owner has been in the situation where they need to purchase pet food. As a new owner of a dog, the first time you go shopping for food is a little overwhelming. You go to your local pet store, and you are faced with an aisle full of all different types of dog food. There are shelves and shelves of different brands, different flavors and different textures. How on earth do you know which type and brand of food to buy? A lot of people go for the cheapest food they can find, because looking at all the brands, the pictures on the cans look the same- they all show fresh vegetables and meats, so why not buy the cheapest?
If you truly want what’s best for your pet, you should never buy food for your dog based on what is cheapest on the market. While not always the case, the cheapest food typically is the least healthy for your dog, as it contains a bunch of fillers on top of the meats and vegetables that it advertises. Just because it has pictures of healthy ingredients on the outside of the package doesn’t mean that the majority of what’s inside is what’s on the picture.
You should know which breed of dog you have before you choose a food for him or her. Because varying breeds have their own requirements for nutrition, the best dog food for your dog is one made for their type. You need to find food made for a small breed of dog if you have a dog like a chihuahua or a terrier. If you have a large breed of dog like a sheep dog or a husky, you need to find a food formulated for big dogs. This also goes for how much activity your dog gets. You want a food with a lot of protein, minerals and vitamins if your dog is very active. He will need this to fuel his system. If you have a dog that spends a lot of time being stationary, like a bulldog, you can still use a high protein food but you should feed him less to maintain a healthy weight.
When you are at the store wondering which type of food to purchase for your dog, you should analyze the ingredients listed on the can before choosing one. While the list of things inside the food can be very long, the predominant ingredients are the first three to five listed. If you find that potatoes, rice or corn are in the top five things shown on the can, then you know that the food has a lot of filler and will not be a wholesome dog food.
While looking at the pet store, you can even find organic dog food available. These are not permeated with synthetics such as chemicals or hormones that really can harm your pet in the long run. Though organic dog food can be a lot more expensive, these foods may even help your pet live a longer, fuller life because they are natural.
