Alaska soldier held on suspicion of espionage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A 22-year-old U.S. Army soldier based in Alaska is being held without bail on suspicion of espionage.

The Anchorage Daily News (http://bit.ly/ux1RkW ) reports Spec. William C. Millay was arrested Friday.

The FBI spokesman for Alaska, Eric Gonzalez, says his agency and military personnel investigated the case. Millay is based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage. He was jailed at the Anchorage jail but Gonzalez says Millay will be prosecuted through the military justice system.

Gonzalez says there is no connection between Millay and leaks of information to WikiLeaks.

According to a weekend story in The Army Times, Millay was a military policeman from Owensboro, Ky., and was assigned to the 164th Military Police Company. Most members of that company are on a year deployment to Afghanistan that started in March.

The fact that his unit deployed to Afghanistan without him is a clue that he is not your recruiting poster Soldier.

Ok, a 22 year old solider (Military Policeman) doesn't have that kind of access unless he's guarding something. He's a ground pounder, Hey YAHOO what did he allegedly sell? Lame reporting on Yahoo's part.

What a great story. The only way to improve it would be to find out what it's all about before you write it up.

I'm curious to know who he was allegedly spying for. If he did turn traitor, shoot him, if he didn't apologize to him.

Being someone that lives on this base, and having a husband in the military, this is very scary to me. And for those doubters that this young kid could have info to sell, none of us really know what his job entails and what his security clearance is, and what he sees on a daily basis. And don't forget that he could also just be a means of access to the base, where his cohorts could gather info. I'm glad they caught him and that they will catch those he's working with and for soon. Alaska may not seem like a place where there would be alot of info found, but there is a HUGE military presence here in Anchorage, up north in Fairbanks, and other parts of Alaska, and this kid put over 65,000 military troops and their families in danger. Not to include the over 200,000 people in Anchorage alone. Here's to hoping they prosecute him to the fullest extent of the MILITARY law and that he never sees the light of day again.

At 22 years old and being a spc. what info could he offer the enemy. not much they dont already know

I bet there is more to the story. Espionage consists of a very large spectrum of actvities. If the security clearance is high enough, just voicing one's job description can be considered espionage.
