What is the difference between a generic pnp monitor and a generic non-pnp monitor?

I use a generic non-pnp monitor. But when I try and run applications my screen goes black, and i get a messege saying "Signal Out of Range". But when I run the same application on a generic pnp monitor it works just fine.
