Remember how often we tell ourselves that in order to behave responsibly, we must do what others expect of us? So much so we strive to fulfill the expectations of other people, often to be disappointed because what we do or create does not fulfill our very own expectations.

A responsible behavior is found in spending and investing our life the way we choose. You may argue that is pretty irresponsible. After all, don’t we have obligations to our spouse, children, job and most probably to an array of people and things?

This raises a fundamental issue each of us need to address for ourselves – who are you living for?

Indeed, the path to a new life isn’t always as simple as black and white, yes or no. The fact is, other people do play a role in how we live and ultimately, how we are able to manage our journey. On the other hand, all of us are social animals. Thus, to divorce ourselves from others, dismissing their opinions and reactions as unimportant, is indeed unreasonable.

But don’t you think it is necessary and important for us to prepare them for our new direction? Often those we know will be supportive of us. You see, our family and the friends we have in place does not want to lose us. And they will do whatever they can to keep our love and friendship. As for those who will continuously resist our efforts to redefine who and what we are – some so much, we will have no alternative except to leave them behind.

For those who are contemplating change, the biggest obstacle is their will to grow. This will to grow is made up of determination to step away from regimented behaviors and towards a life potentially much greater and rewarding. Well, it does take lots of courage, step-by-step, to pursue this richer life because there are no guarantees of any success.

I believe the motivation to realize our dreams and goals begins with an idea. And by not being assured of the outcome we want, it could probably act as an anchor to our current circumstances. But be mindful, this is an anchor from which every one of us, sincerely desires a better and richer life.

You see, the choice is yours to make. Time and tide waits for no men. And opportunity never knocks twice. So …………………………………… who are you living for?
