The Green's leader, Caroline Lucas, is standing in Brighton

The Greens claim they are on track to have their first ever MP. Leader Caroline Lucas is standing in Brighton Pavilion and the party is "confident" despite admitting they face a strong Conservative challenge. The seat has long been the number one target and "is now a two way fight", said a spokeswoman for the party which is fielding more than 300 candidates. She said they had more than 100 activists campaigning in the constituency over the weekend. "The Tories have been running a very targeted campaign, and we are fighting a very positive one. We have been working really, really hard in Brighton for a very long time now." The Green Party in England and Wales (Scotland has its own sister organisation) is fielding 335 candidates in total. 'Breakthrough' After Brighton Pavilion their next two main target seats are Lewisham and Deptford, and Norwich South, although the party spokeswoman was reticent to say whether it had a chance of winning either. "We are confident, they are target seats, and everybody knows what that means," she said. "We have a real fighting chance." She added that the party was also hoping to see a big increase in its vote in Lancaster and Cambridge "to aim for a breakthrough next time". The party is hoping to increase its overall vote across England and Wales, but says this campaign has not been easy for smaller parties following the televised leadership debates between Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg. "We fight hard for all the coverage we get, but it is a fight," added the Green's spokeswoman. The full list of candidates for Brighton Pavilion is: Leo Atreides, Independent; Nigel Carter, UK Independence Party; Ian Fyvie, Socialist Labour Party; Soraya Kara, Citizens for Undead Rights and Equality; Caroline Lucas, Green; Bernadette Millam, Liberal Democrat; Nancy Platts, Labour; Charlotte Vere, Conservative.
